Nationwide — Former President Donald Trump announced Monday that the United States will increase its efforts to deliver food aid to Gaza, promising to help establish “food centers” to address the growing humanitarian crisis in the region. While the move has been welcomed by many as a necessary step to address widespread hunger in the war-torn area, critics point out the glaring silence from Trump on equally dire famines in Haiti, which is being called a “UN-declared famine hotspot” and several African nations.
The Hill reports that peaking alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump said the food distribution centers in Gaza would be set up with help from the U.S. and other allied countries. He stressed the importance of making aid accessible, saying the centers would operate without fences or barriers. “We’re going to do it in conjunction with some very good people… and we’re going to supply funds,” Trump said. “We’re also going to make sure they don’t have barriers stopping people.”
Trump’s renewed attention on Gaza comes after months of images and reports showing Palestinian children on the brink of starvation, due to blockades and the ongoing war with Israel. “Some of those kids — that’s real starvation. I see it. And you can’t fake that,” he said. However, observers note the irony in Trump’s compassion for Gaza while he remains largely silent on Haiti’s spiraling food crisis and ongoing famine conditions in countries like Sudan and Somalia.
Despite global outcry and multiple warnings from the United Nations about the escalating hunger crises in the Caribbean and across Africa, Trump has not proposed similar relief efforts in those regions. Advocates for global food security say this selective attention undermines the broader fight against hunger worldwide.
When asked about Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s denial of starvation in Gaza, Trump countered, “I mean, based on television, I would say not particularly, because those children look very hungry.” Yet, his comments have done little to reassure critics who question why only some starving children receive the world’s attention while others are overlooked.
Prime Minister Starmer agreed with the need for urgent action in Gaza, calling the situation “absolutely intolerable.” Still, the silence surrounding Haiti and Africa’s suffering leaves many wondering when or if similar empathy and resources will ever be extended to those regions.
