American president Donald Trump Jr. has imposed a 25% reciprocal tariff along with penalties on India. The tariffs will be effective August 1st.
In his stern text on Truth Social, Trump stated that while India is a friend, the country’s tariff, however, is the highest in the world. He also accused India of buying arms and energy from Russia, which is the arch nemesis of America. He quipped
“Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country.”
Trump further added,
“Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE – ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!
He further wrote, continuing in all caps,
“INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST 1st. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!”
In another post on Truth Social Trump continued his tirade
“I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India; their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world. Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let’s keep it that way.”
Amid a tariff war with India, the USA has shown its soft stance for Pakistan, declaring an intention to sign a deal with India’s padosi over massive petroleum reserves.

The desi internet reacted with a dollop of memes over the 25% tariff. Hotmail’s co-founder Sabeer Bhatia suggested, “Instead of retaliating with counter tariffs, India should drop tariffs on American goods to zero. It’ll pressure Trump to lower tariffs on Indian products and software.” “A smart move—and a clear signal that India seeks true friendship with the U.S.,” he added. Meanwhile, Divya Kumar Soti quipped, “Just activate FSSAI and make Coca-Cola and Pepsi offer the same quality of beverages to Indian customers as they offer to US customers. Trump will forget about tariffs within 24 hrs.” Comic and actor Vir Das jibed, “It’s 12.5% for pyaar and 12.5% for Dosti.”
