Veterans job fair connects families to career opportunities

More veterans are looking for work after layoffs and federal workforce cuts, and recruiters are hoping to connect them with employers with available positions in North Texas.

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and RecruitMilitary say more than 65 companies are expected to attend a Military Veterans Job Fair in Arlington on February 5th.

Event organizers say there will be companies with thousands of open positions across multiple industries. The event is open to veterans, transitioning service members, members of the Guard and Reserve, and military spouses and dependents.

Details and registration are posted on RecruitMilitary’s event page.

Raul Torres, an event director with RecruitMilitary, said employers come to these events because they understand that veterans, military spouses and dependents can bring unique skills to the workplace, but may need help translating their experiences on their resume.

“Companies come to our events, to us, because they already understand that this demographic of veterans and spouses is what they’re looking for. So everything from leadership skills, everything from just coming to work with a fantastic work ethic, all those things combined, that’s what they’re looking for, and that’s why they turned to us to kind of solve them” said Torres.

The job fair comes as the veteran unemployment rate increased in December to 3.8 percent, though it remained below the comparable non-veteran unemployment rate, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The Military Community Job Fair is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday at AT&T Stadium. Organizers recommend that veterans register in advance and complete a profile.
