Vivo Launches Vision Headset, A Lighter And Cheaper Apple Vision Pro Rival

Chinese smartphone maker Vivo has entered the mixed reality space with its first MR headset, the Vision Discovery Edition, positioned as a rival to Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest 3. The device is equipped with dual 8K micro-LED displays, offering a sharp per-eye resolution of 3840 × 3552 pixels. Vivo claims the Vision Explorer Edition delivers 94% DCI-P3 color coverage, ensuring vibrant and immersive visuals for users.

Vivo claims its new mixed reality headset, the Vision Discovery Edition, will provide users with a 180-degree panoramic view and a massive repositionable 120-foot virtual screen. The device supports gesture controls and features highly precise eye-tracking with 1.5-degree accuracy. Weighing just 398 grams—significantly lighter than Apple’s 600+ gram Vision Pro—the headset uses magnesium alloy components to cut down bulk, while measuring 83mm in height and 40mm in thickness.

Under the hood, the headset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2 chipset, which Vivo says delivers 2.5 times better performance than its predecessor. The device runs on Vivo’s custom OriginOS Vision platform, designed specifically for MR experiences.

Vivo is pitching the Vision Discovery Edition primarily as an entertainment device, with features for streaming sports and accessing real-time match data. The company has partnered with Red Bull Austria and Sony Pictures Television to offer exclusive content, along with two MR titles—Table Drum Master and Little Vs Journey. Users with Vivo’s X200 smartphone will also be able to seamlessly share images and videos to the headset.

Unlike traditional launches, the Vision Discovery Edition won’t be available for direct purchase at first. Starting August 22, customers in China can sign up for trials at 12 stations across cities including Beijing and Shanghai. Preorders are open, but Vivo has not confirmed pricing yet. Reports suggest it could be around 10,000 yuan (~$1,395 / ₹1,21,599), making it far more affordable than Apple’s $3,499 Vision Pro but more expensive than Meta’s $499 Quest 3.
