What's Free in the Epic Games Store This Week?

Are you on the hunt for new games but are tired of running out of options? Or are you someone who always takes advantage of free stuff? We don’t blame you. With increasing game prices and tariffs on the rise, you’ll want to save money whenever possible. Thankfully, there’s a place you can go where you’re able to nab free stuff while also giving you the choice to purchase other affordable games. Enter: the Epic Games Store.

After the huge success of Fortnite, a battle royale game that partnered with major brands like Marvel, Star Wars and DC, Epic decided to take things even further. In 2019, it launched its very own store to compete with Valve’s Steam. Unlike Steam, it offers free games every week, ranging from adorable indie titles to big-budget AAA hits.

But how do you access these free games? Is there something you need to do first? We have the answers you’re looking for. First, create a free Epic Games account. Once you’ve finished signing up, check out the free games section on the Epic Games Store each Thursday at 8 a.m. PT (11 a.m ET, 4 p.m BST) to discover the picks of the week.

It’s important to know that the number of free games you receive each week may differ but you are always guaranteed to receive at least one. That said, there may be some breaks during holidays, or occasions where the games themselves are not revealed until the day of. There are also occasions, such as the lead-up to Christmas, where Epic releases new free games every single day. But you know what the best part is? These downloaded games are yours to keep — forever!

The Epic Games Store is exclusively available for PC, so console gamers cannot access the weekly free games offered there. Additionally, while the store also provides games for Mac, compatibility may vary. So make sure you verify the game can run on your device before you download it.

What’s the new free game in the Epic Games Store this week? (July 31 to Aug. 7)

Keylocker

If you’re a fan of rhythm and turn-based games, but also want to give a middle finger to the system, then you’ll want to pay attention to Keylocker.

A screenshot from Keylocker

Epic Games Store/Moonana Games

Developed by Moonana Games and published by Serenity Forge, Keylocker is a Cyberpunk turn-based rhythm JRPG that puts players in the shoes of electric singer, B0B0. Only there’s just one teensy, eensy problem: They live in a world where music is outlawed. As a singer, you can see why that might be a kick in the teeth for ol’ B0B0.

Features include classic turn-based combat but with a rhythmic twist. You’ll have to master the timing of your shots, parries and blocks to kick your enemies to the curb. Better yet, there are zero random encounters, so you’ll be able to play through the game without having to worry about relentless grinding.

Keylocker also offers plenty of customization options. Not only are you able to change equipment, weapons and skills, but you’ll also be able to shape B0B0’s path in their own way, with unique skill trees and storylines depending on the choices you make throughout the game’s storyline. What’s not to like?

And if you’re looking for a game that you can play again and again with different choices, then look no further. Depending on the decisions you make, for example, befriending a citizen instead of betraying them, you can drastically change the course of the story for B0B0 and the other characters you meet along the way.

Usually $20, Keylocker is available free now via the Epic Games Store. At the time of writing, a review score is not available. However, on rival storefront Steam, its overall rating is “Very Positive,” with its most recent score being “Mostly Positive.”

Pilgrims

If you’ve always wanted to travel and meet extraordinary people without actually leaving the house, then Amanita Design’s Pilgrims is just the game for you.

Epic Games Store/Amanita Design

Pilgrims describes itself as an adventure game that thrives on “playfulness.” While you can easily finish the game in an hour or two, the real reward is meeting the numerous inhabitants you come across while playing. Each has their own unique trouble that they want your help in solving, but it’s not one solution that fits all sort of deal — you’ll need to explore to find out the many ways you can help others.

Amanita Design encourages players to replay Pilgrims more than once to get all 45 achievements and, let’s be honest, if you’re a sucker for a game with a cute hand-drawn style set in a unique and humorous world, why wouldn’t you want to jump in again and again?

Usually $6, Pilgrims is now available free via the Epic Games Store. At the time of writing, a review score is not available. However, on rival storefront Steam, its overall rating is “Overwhelmingly Positive,” with its most recent score being “Very Positive.”

What will be free in the Epic Games Store next week? (Aug. 7 to Aug. 14)

112 Operator

If you want one of the most stressful jobs in the world without the weight of actually having lives depending on you, then Jutsu Games’ emergency service simulator will be well-worth your time.

A screenshot from 112 Operator.

Jutsu Games/Epic Games Store

As an emergency number operator, it’s up to you to put out several fires at once (figuratively and literally) and ensure that people get the help they need. This can range from something as simple as sending the fire service to help Timmy rescue his kitty from a tree to dispatching an ambulance to assist people involved in a road accident.

If it sounds simple, let me reassure you that’s far from the case. While players can pick and choose the width and length of the area they cover (a small town versus a bustling city, for example), they also have to pay attention to several other factors when making those all-important calls. I’m talking about the weather, traffic and the changing of seasons. All of these have some level of added danger you need to be mindful of.

Players can also choose whether to play the game in its challenging Career Mode or put themselves through their paces in a more relaxed Free Game. The latter gives you more freedom to do whatever you wish, but the former allows you to move up the corporate ladder by issuing challenges that are fun but do enough to keep you on your toes.

Usually $25, 112 Operator is will be available free next week via the Epic Games Store. At the time of writing, a review score is not available. However, on rival storefront Steam, its overall rating is “Very Positive,” with its most recent score also being “Very Positive.”

Road Redemption

Let’s be honest: Who hasn’t wanted to be part of a motorcycle gang, grab a bat and hit a lot of things? Well, now you can with Pixel Dash Studios’ racing-beat-em-up, Road Redemption.

A screenshot from Road Redemption

Road Redemption/Epic Games Store

Describing itself as an action racing game, Road Redemption is, in my humble opinion, much more than that. You, as the ultimate motorcyclist in this virtual world, are the leader of your gang and are tasked with leading your posse in an epic journey across the country. Only, as you might have expected, it isn’t quite as simple because other gangs are willing to try to take you out (and we don’t mean on a date) along the way.

Alongside racing cross-country, players will get the chance to take in multiple activities such as assassinations, robberies and other challenges. The downside is that you only have one life, so if some jerk hits you with a lead pipe and kills you dead, it’s game over … for a little while. With the experience you’ve earned collecting loot and doing jobs, you can upgrade your new character, bike and weapons.

Better yet, you don’t have to ride alone. Road Redemption also comes with four-player split-screen co-op, meaning you and your friends can ride out and deliver racing beat-em-up action together.

Usually $20, Road Redemption will be available free next week via the Epic Games Store. At the time of writing, a review score is not available. However, on rival storefront Steam, its overall rating is “Very Positive,” with its most recent score also being “Very Positive.”
