Who runs the world? | DFW female wrestlers plan to show up and show out at special wrestling event

Metroplex Wrestling will be hosting its first ever all women show in August, headlined by one of the biggest wrestlers today, North Texas’ own Athena.

BEDFORD, Texas — A one-of-a-kind pro wrestling event is being held in North Texas next weekend, giving fans an opportunity to see local female wrestlers in the spotlight.

Metroplex Wrestling’s “Who Runs the World?” is the first all-women showcase held by the local independent wrestling company. It’s the passion project of the owner of Metroplex Wrestling, and the current Ring of Honor Women’s World Champion, Athena.

This is something Athena and others at Metroplex Wrestling have been trying to plan for more than a year and a half. And this won’t feature just female talent in the ring, but women will be producing the show, announcing the show, and refereeing the matches.

“When I started wrestling in Texas, there were only three girls in the state, and I didn’t really have a lot of guidance,” Athena said at a media scrum following All In: Texas earlier this month. “I look at such a young generation now and the gap of experience level, from those of us that have traveled the world and those of us that are just getting started, and there’s not a lot of crossover with that.”

Athena said she wanted to provide a platform with Metroplex Wrestling, where women can learn how to work TV-style wrestling, how to wrestle with some of the best in the world, and learn from them. It’s an opportunity she’s had for years, wrestling all over the world, but she’s bringing it to local wrestlers here in North Texas, to show who they are and tell their story.

“It’s just paying it forward and leaving the business better than when you got in,” she said.

One particular wrestler Athena has paid it forward to is Maya World, a local wrestler whom Athena took under her wing about a year into her career. World has been wrestling for just a few years, but has already wrestled several times for Ring of Honor, including in a match against Athena in December 2023.

“She’s gotten me so many opportunities,” World said about Athena. “She believes in me so much, more than anybody ever has.”

World credits her ROH debut to Athena, who she said asked to showcase World in a match with her a day after the Final Battle pay-per-view in Garland. She said Athena has many students she works to get opportunities for, both men and women.

Both World and Athena will be working at the Metroplex Wrestling show. World said she thinks all the women working on the show know how important it is.

“You should expect all the women to show up and show out,” World said.

The show will take place on Aug. 9 at 510 Harwood Road in Bedford. For tickets and more information, click here.
