Woman Claims ChatGPT Diagnosed Mom’s Illness After Doctors Failed for Over a Year

A viral post on X has reignited debate about the growing role of AI in healthcare, thanks to a powerful personal story shared by a user named Shreya. She revealed that after 1.5 years of failed treatments and inconclusive diagnoses from top doctors and major hospitals, it was ChatGPT—OpenAI’s artificial intelligence chatbot—that helped identify the likely cause of her mother’s mysterious illness. Despite trying every available medical path, including homeopathy, Ayurveda, and allopathy, her mother’s condition only worsened over time.

In her emotional post, Shreya wrote: “My mom had a nonstop cough for 1.5 years. We saw top doctors, visited big hospitals in & out of the city, tried homoeopathy, ayurveda, allopathy, nothing helped. It got worse: internal bleeding started. Doctors said, ‘If this goes on for 6 more months, it could be fatal.’” The story has since gone viral, drawing attention to AI’s potential in solving medical mysteries that stump even the most seasoned professionals.

Shreya eventually turned to ChatGPT out of desperation, describing her mother’s worsening symptoms in detail. The AI chatbot suggested several possible causes, with one standing out—side effects from blood pressure medication. When Shreya confirmed her mother was on BP meds, ChatGPT asked about a specific ingredient. Shocked by the precision, Shreya checked and found it was indeed present. A doctor confirmed the suspicion and switched her medication. “Now she’s finally healing,” Shreya posted on X. “Not exaggerating, but ChatGPT saved her life.”

The post quickly went viral, igniting conversations about AI’s role in healthcare. One user wrote, “Unbelievable, it means in the future, doctors could become unemployed due to AI. Some tasks of doctors, like diagnosis of illness, can be done by AI in better ways.” Another user echoed both concern and relief, saying, “I’m really glad your mom is feeling better. But honestly, this also shows a big problem in medical care. Doctors should’ve checked if the cough was from her BP medicine, it’s a known side effect. What’s shocking isn’t that ChatGPT figured it out, but that so many doctors missed something that should’ve been basic.”

Other comments praised the role of AI and Shreya’s determination. “Wow! That’s how the right usage of AI comes into place,” said one user, while another added, “That’s powerful. It’s your persistence that truly saved her.” The conversation also included cautious optimism, with one commenter noting, “Good that your mom got lucky, but I guess it will still take a few years for AI to reach the level where it will replace experts.”

Some users reflected on the growing reliability of AI tools in healthcare. One person wrote, “ChatGPT is indeed the first aid sort of help. It does tell you the real possibilities, unlike Google.” Another simply concluded, “Glad your mom is healing. Yes, AI can be great.” Overall, the responses revealed both the promise of AI in diagnostics and the pressing need for better diligence in traditional medical systems.
