Yikes! Utah Teen Mom Allegedly “Forgot” Toddler In Hot Car While Watching ‘Smurfs’ Movie

A Utah teen mom, Tripura Merriex, is facing serious charges after allegedly choosing a movie over her child’s safety — and the details are disturbing. What started as a simple trip to see ‘Smurfs’ quickly turned into a life-threatening situation for her 2-year-old daughter. Now, the incident has people online outraged and asking: how far is too far for a little peace and quiet?

Tripura Merriex “Forgets” Child To Watch ‘Smurfs’

According to Lake City police, Tripura Merriex first pulled her child out of the theater when the toddler started crying. Rather than cooling her off, she supposedly placed the toddler in the SUV and returned to the air‑conditioned theater. Additionally, when questioned by police, she claimed to have “forgotten” the child. But, witnesses paint a different picture: Merriex allegedly checked on the child periodically or sent siblings to do so, while she stayed put inside.

More Details On Tripura Merriex’s Case

Officers arrived around 5:49 p.m., smashed a window, and found the toddler “sweating profusely, and crying in distress. Despite the urgent situation, police flagged Merriex for behaving “very nonchalant,” brushing off concerns like it was no big deal. She’s now jailed under $50,000 bond and charged with felony child neglect. The little girl was taken to Lake City Medical Center but is now reported to be doing okay.

Chief of Police Gerald Butler revealed in a statement:

“Our officers acted swiftly to ensure the safety of this young child. Leaving a child unattended in a vehicle under these conditions is unacceptable. We are thankful the child is safe and urge all parents to prioritise the well-being of their children at all times, he added.”

Is This A Growing Trend?

As previously reported, another mom is facing serious charges after a heartbreaking incident that left one child dead and another hospitalized. According to police, Maya Hernandez, 20, allegedly left her 1-year-old and 2-year-old sons inside a car while she got lip fillers at a med spa. Additionally, the June 29th temps soared past 100 degrees. Reportedly, she asked if the kids could stay in the waiting room. However, when told no, she chose to leave them in the vehicle with snacks and a cellphone. She’s now been charged with involuntary manslaughter and two counts of willful cruelty to a child.
