The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shooting at an unsanctioned “trail ride” event, officials said.
ELLIS COUNTY, Texas — Three people were shot and injured, one critically, at an “unsanctioned trail ride event,” the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
Deputies responded around 1:30 a.m. Sunday to a shooting at 830 Batchelor Road in Red Oak, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. When deputies arrived, they found three adults suffering from gunshot wounds, the release stated.
All three victims were taken to a hospital for treatment, and one person remains in intensive care, officials said.
The shooting occurred at an “unsanctioned ‘trail ride’ event,” which was advertised as a paid event with live entertainers and a back-to-school cash giveaway, according to an event flyer provided by the sheriff’s office.
Deputies found that a majority of people in attendance at the event were not residents of Ellis County and traveled there from neighboring counties, the release said.
State law requires that large-scale events, meeting certain attendance thresholds, obtain a permit from the county before the event, officials said. The county did not issue a permit for the trail ride event, officials said.
“We take public safety seriously, especially when it comes to large, unregulated events that draw crowds from outside our county,” Brad Norman, Ellis County Sheriff, said. “These gatherings create unnecessary risks for our community and strain local emergency services.”
Officials did not immediately release any additional information about possible suspects.
