After installation, the Downtown Austin Alliance will paint the barriers as part of a barricade “beautification” project.
AUSTIN, Texas — The city of Austin will install permanent concrete barriers on Sixth Street this month, according to a new memo.
In the Aug. 1 memo, Austin Public Works Director Richard Mendoza said the barriers will be installed next week between the sidewalk and the road, replacing the temporary barriers.
After installation, the Downtown Austin Alliance will conduct a barricade “beautification” project to “enhance the visual experience and aesthetics” of the barriers by painting them.
The memo said city staff met with business and property owners in early June to discuss both the interim barriers and long-term design changes.
Installation is set to begin on Aug. 11.
The city initially installed fencing as a barrier along Sixth Street in December 2024 as part of an effort to offer widened sidewalks to pedestrians while simultaneously reopening the street to vehicle traffic on weekends.
Since the launch of the project, preliminary Austin Police Department (APD) data has shown positive results, including reductions in arrests, use-of-force incidents and officer injuries in the Sixth Street area.
