The Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns are preparing for another championship pursuit under coach Mark Waggoner in the 2025 season.
HAMSHIRE, Texas — The dawn of a new regime for the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns is on the horizon.
2024 was a special season filled with heavy anticipation which ended with a District 9 4A Division II championship for the Horns.
Turning the page, head coach Mark Waggoner now enters his eighth season in Hamshire with a fresh group of young players to complement his championship-driven veterans.
The up-and-coming Longhorns, who will be chasing varsity roster spots, come from a junior varsity squad that ran the table, going 9-0 last season.
One major key factor returning this year to help give leadership while providing dynamic playmaking ability is wide receiver and linebacker Pierce Pirtle.
Pirtle is a four-year starter who began his journey as a safety and was then converted to linebacker and became an enormous piece of the district championship puzzle.
Sophomore quarterback Blake Broussard now sits in the offensive saddle as Offensive Willie Ray Smith Award winner Ty Bryson heads off to Lamar to play under Pete Rossomando.
Coach Waggoner already has been very impressed by the amount of poise the sophomore shows in what will be his first season on varsity.
“Big shoes to fill,” Coach Waggoner stated about the position Broussard is in following Bryson’s stunning high school career.
“He {Broussard} had a good guy to watch, he’s taken the bull by the horns and said ‘hey, I’m the guy’ and we’ve been very impressed with him,” said Waggoner.
The Longhorns will be pursuing yet another district title in 2025, but the season begins with a huge matchup week one as the Horns are on the road against the reigning District 10 4A Division I champion LCM Bears.
