HOUSTON, TX (August 4, 2025) – Houston Public Media announced the appointments of Scott Flannigan as senior news director and Edgar Zavala as senior director of technical operations. Both positions report directly to Interim Station Manager Laurie Johnson-Ramirez.
Flannigan brings a deep history of expertise in multiplatform content development and community-focused journalism. His appointment strengthens the organization’s newsroom leadership as it works to serve Houston’s diverse communities through broadcast, digital and social platforms.
“With three decades in journalism, I’ve witnessed the evolution of our industry and the impact it can have on local communities,” said Flannigan. “The role of trusted, in-depth journalism has never been more vital. I’m proud to join Houston Public Media, and I look forward to helping shape multiplatform content that serves, informs and reflects our many communities.”
Zavala brings four decades of television industry experience to his new role, having led technical teams through major industry transitions, navigating technology advancements and supporting content creation and distribution. He previously led the buildout of a 60,000 square-foot media facility for Houston’s NBC affiliate, KPRC.
“Houston Public Media has a great team of experts, and I look forward to helping navigate our new challenges as we work to grow our audience in our community,” said Zavala. “Being a Houstonian for the last 38 years, and a proud UH alum, I am excited to be joining an organization whose mission prioritizes community engagement and growth.”
