The American Revolution was one of the most significant events in world history because it created a “new thing called a citizen,” iconic filmmaker Ken Burns told CBS News, as the nation celebrates the Fourth of July exactly one year before its 250 birthday.
“I think the American Revolution is the most important event since the birth of Christ in all of world history. … I mean, it turned the world upside down,” Burns told CBS News’ John Dickerson in an interview set to air on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on Sunday.
Before the war that secured the American colonies’ independence from Great Britain, “everyone was a subject, essentially under the rule of somebody else,” Burns said.
The colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
“We had created in this moment a very brand new thing called a citizen, and this has had powerful effects,” he said. “It’s going to set in motion revolutions for the next two plus centuries, all around the world, all attempting to sort of give a new expression to this idea that all men are created equal, that they’re endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, and that’s a big, big deal in world history.”
“The greatness of the American people comes from telling these complicated stories, and that’s a good story,” he said. “We want to feel that we know who Thomas Jefferson is. We need to understand the internal struggles that Abraham Lincoln had. We have to understand what was going through Rosa Parks’ mind when she, you know, refused to give up her seat on the bus.”
Trying to understand these stories “in no way takes away from the glory,” Burns added.
“It just makes the story fuller and richer and permits purchase for everyone,” he said. “You want a history to be complicated because it gives everybody a chance to own or have access to it.”
Citing scholar Maggie Blackhawk, an NYU law professor who appears in his upcoming film, Burns said the Declaration of Independence is “deeply significant to people at the margins” even though the words of the original document don’t include them.
“They do not include women, they do not include the poor, they do not include any enslaved or free African Americans. They do not include Native Americans,” he said. “But the words themselves are so inspirational that they begin to suggest a much larger and more, what we would say, kind of American polity. That a bunch of us all together, of different varieties, doing lots of different things and pursuing happiness, this idea of virtue and lifelong learning.”
Watch more of Dickerson’s interview with Burns on “CBS Evening News” Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET and on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” Sunday at 10:30 a.m. ET.
For decades, fiscal hawks have warned about the devastating consequences of ballooning U.S. debt.
But economists say this time around is different: The debt is now so large that piling more on top of it as part of President Donald Trump’s massive tax cut and spending bill could set the country on a dangerous path.
“It’s like the house is burning down and we’re throwing in some accelerant instead of some fire extinguisher,” said Kent Smetters, professor of economics and public policy at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton. “Even without this bill, our fiscal house is burning … we’re not too big to fail.”
Smetters warns that even without this bill, the U.S. was already on what he calls an “exploding debt path,” giving the government perhaps 20 years — at most — to make meaningful reforms before the consequences become severe.
“If we don’t, the ramifications are pretty serious. Bond markets can be really, really disciplinary,” Smetters said.
At the center of the current debate is Trump’s sweeping policy measure, which the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects would add $3.4 trillion to the federal deficit over the next 10 years.

The White House disputes the CBO’s forecast. Trump has argued on social media that stronger economic growth, coupled with tariff revenues, would offset the cost of the bill.”Our country is going to explode with massive growth … This bill sets us on course for enormous prosperity in the new and wonderful Golden Age of America,” Trump wrote.
But many economists disagree.
Trump’s bill is one of the most expensive pieces of legislation in generations, while also lowering the amount of tax revenue the country collets for decades to come.
Even without this bill, the federal debt is at record levels — roughly equal to the size of the entire U.S. economy. It’s estimated about one in every four dollars paid in personal income taxes goes toward interest on the national debt.
Americans should care, economists told ABC News, because bigger federal deficits mean higher interest rates. That means more expensive mortgages, car loans, and it crowds out business investments that would make workers more productive, according to Douglas Elmendorf, professor at Harvard Kennedy School and former economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers.
Plus, more debt means less room to respond to crises, they say.
“It’s like a family that taps out its credit cards and then has a problem with the roof of their house. You want to have a little room to maneuver in case bad things happen, and we are running out of that room,” Elmendorf said.

The U.S. navigated the 2008 financial crisis and COVID-19 pandemic with massive federal government spending. That debt never came down, which means the government will have fewer options in the face of another crisis.
The risk of rising debt levels has felt intangible because the U.S. is the gold standard, so the expectation has been that the world will continue buying U.S. debt. As the world’s largest economy and the issuer of the global reserve currency, the U.S. has long benefitted from strong demand for its debt. But that’s not guaranteed — the bond markets showed jitters earlier this year. And the fear is that investors will at some point start doubting the strength of the US economy and the ability of the U.S. to pay off their debt.
Economists fear this could kick off a doom loop: the debt makes interest rates higher, which then makes the debt even bigger, making it even harder for the U.S. to sell off its debt, thus ballooning the debt even more (hence the doom loop).
“This bill will make interest rates higher and makes the risks of falling into a doom loop higher than it would be otherwise. But economists still don’t know when we’d hit the doom loop,” Elmendorf said.
If that scenario unfolds, the U.S. could be forced into painful austerity.
“If we fall into a doom loop, then the U.S. has to make dramatic cutbacks in federal benefit programs like social security and Medicaid and sharply raise taxes. That will be really bad for people’s standard of living. That’s why it’s important to take moderate actions before that happens,” Elmendorf added.

Moderna(MRNA 0.66%), the next-generation healthcare company most famous for developing the Spikevax coronavirus vaccine, was an uncharacteristically popular stock. Investors piled into its shares over the week, sending it to a more than 12% gain over the period, according to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence. Positive news from the lab was a significant factor in this.
Flu fighter
On Monday, Moderna published the results of a late-stage study of mRNA-1010, its seasonal flu vaccine. In a phase 3 clinical trial the vaccine, developed using Moderna’s signature mRNA-based approach, produced a more robust immune response than a standard flu jab currently available on the market.
That surely came as a relief to Moderna investors, since the company’s latest stock-rattling news was its withdrawal of a Food and Drug Administration application for a combination COVID-19/flu vaccine in May. At the time, the company pledged to submit a new application based on efficacy data from the stand-alone trial.
Along with the latest findings for mRNA-1010, Moderna said that it would also resubmit its application for the combination vaccine.
As for the flu shot alone, in the press release detailing the trial’s results the company quoted CEO Stéphane Bancel as saying that they “are a significant milestone in our effort to reduce the burden of influenza in older adults.”
Waiting for further development(s)
Although this latest development is the good news Moderna shareholders have been waiting for quite some time to receive, I personally don’t think it makes the company’s stock a buy in and of itself, as I can’t imagine a new flu vaccine will light the world on fire.
Having said that, Moderna does have an admirably loaded slate of development programs, so if one or several show promise the shares might become more enticing.

It looks like the Reese family is adding another pro baller to the mix! One familiar face from college hoops is leveling up with one of the NBA’s most legendary franchises: the Los Angeles Lakers. With his sister, Angel Reese, already dominating the professional court, it was only a matter of time before Julian Reese carved out his own highlight reel.
Julian Reese, the younger brother of Angel Reese, has officially signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. After going undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft, the 6-foot-9 former University of Maryland standout is making his own plays. The news was confirmed by ADS Sports Management, the Minneapolis-based agency that represents several Division I athletes.
“Big congrats to Julian Reese, who will head to LA with the Lakers!” the agency wrote in a social media post on Instagram.
She Laid The Blueprint Down For Lil’ Bro
Angel has stepped into full-on big sis and boss mode as Julian gets his shot at the league. You already know she’s giving him that real talk—mixing sisterly love with seasoned pro advice. From staying focused under pressure to putting in the work, Angel’s letting him know how to move on the court.
“You’ve got to maximize it because you don’t get these opportunities twice. I told him to show up first and make sure you’re at the front of the line for drills,” she revealed to reporters. “He doesn’t have the opportunity to slack off. He has to maximize it and really push through and really show his all, because it’s now or never. I think he has a really great opportunity, especially with the Lakers and what they need in the front court.” Angel concluded with, “I text him everyday… I’m really happy for him and proud of him.”
Angel Runs The Game, Julian’s Ready To Follow
Lakers newbie Julian Reese has some big shoes to fill—and no shade, but his sister is THAT girl. Angel just scored her third straight BET Sportswoman of the Year award, a feat only Serena Williams has ever achieved. Additionally, she shattered WNBA records for the fastest player to reach 30 double-doubles, and became the league’s top rebounder with 13 rebounds per game. She’s not just winning games—she’s breaking molds, leading her Chicago Sky team, dominating the inaugural 3×3 Unrivaled league as Defensive Player of the Year, and even launching major business moves and philanthropic efforts off the court.
So, it’s clear Angel isn’t just playing—she’s building a movement. With Vogue covers, a growing foundation, a signature podcast, and support from brands like Reebok, Cash App, and McDonald’s, she’s redefined what a modern athlete looks like. The bar is set!
Famed competitive eater Joey “Jaws” Chestnut reclaimed his title Friday at the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest after skipping last year’s gastronomic battle in New York for the coveted Mustard Belt.
Chestnut, 41, consumed 70 1/2 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, falling short of his 2021 record of 76 wieners and buns. It marked the 17th win in 20 appearances for the Westfield, Indiana, eater at the internationally televised competition, which he missed last year over a contract dispute.
“I wish I ate a couple more,” a smiling Chestnut told the crowd, many chanting his name. “Sorry guys. I’ll be back next year.”
Defending champion in the women’s division, Miki Sudo of Tampa, Florida, won her 11th title, downing 33 dogs, besting a dozen competitors. Last year, she ate a record 51 links. She was also apologetic for her performance.
“I feel like I let the fans down a little bit,” Sudo told ESPN. “I heard people in the crowd saying, ‘Go for 52.’ Obviously, I’m always setting my goals high, but the hot dogs weren’t cooperating. For some reason, the buns felt larger today.”
A large crowd, peppered with foam hot dog hats, turned out to witness the annual eat-a-thon, held outside the original Nathan’s Famous restaurant in Coney Island, Brooklyn, since 1972. Many fans showed up to see Chestnut’s much-awaited return to an event he has called “a cherished tradition, a celebration of American culture, and a huge part of my life.”
Chestnut bested 14 fellow competitors from across the U.S. and the world, including Australia, the Czech Republic, Ontario, England and Brazil. Last year’s winner, Patrick Bertoletti of Chicago, came in second place after gobbling up 46 1/2 hot dogs and buns, falling short of the 58 he ate to earn the 2024 men’s title.
“I love being here,” Chestnut told ESPN after his win. “As soon as I found out I was coming, my body — it was easy to train. I love doing it. And I love pushing myself and beating the heck out of people.”
Last year, Major League Eating event organizer George Shea said Chestnut would not be participating in the contest due to a contract dispute. Chestnut struck a deal with a competing brand, the plant-based meat company Impossible Foods.
Chestnut told The Associated Press last month that he had never appeared in any commercials for the company’s vegan hot dogs and that Nathan’s is the only hot dog company he has worked with. But Chestnut acknowledged he “should have made that more clear with Nathan’s.”
Last year, Chestnut ate 57 dogs — in only five minutes — in an exhibition with soldiers at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. He said the event was “amazing” and that he was pleased to still have a chance to eat hot dogs — a lot of them — on July Fourth.
“I’m happy I did that, but I’m really happy to be back at Coney Island,” he said.
Many wellness trends have come and gone over the years, but one is currently having a resurgence. You may remember the vibrating belt machines from the mid-20th century that were promoted as weight loss aids. These vibration plates are once again popping up on social media and in the fitness community, but are they just a gimmick or do they really promote weight loss? Some claim they are an excellent alternative workout method with several health benefits. However, researchers continue to study the potential benefits of vibration exercise.
There’s a lot of hype around vibration plates, but the facts are a bit harder to come by. Many people have taken to sites like Reddit to ask about the effectiveness of these devices, but finding reliable answers can be tricky. That’s why we spoke with personal trainers and other fitness experts to learn more about vibration plates and whether you should use them at home.
What is a vibration plate?
Whole body vibration plates is are a form of exercise machine that shakes rapidly when you stand on it. When you stand on a vibration plate, you’re engaging in a full body vibration exercise, where your muscles are forced to contract and relax quickly.
“The purpose of vibration plates is to generate quick vibrations that cause your body’s muscles to contract and relax several times per second,” says Dr. Leah Verebes, a physical therapist and assistant professor at Touro University’s School of Health Sciences. “At a far greater frequency, this resembles the spontaneous contractions that take place during exercise.”
“This stimulates a subconscious muscle activation each time the machine moves, meaning your muscles are activating far more than they would on a stable surface,” says Laura Wilson, a personal trainer at Life Time Fishers and director of training and curriculum at Power Plate, a company that produces vibrating exercise machines.
There are several ways to use a vibration plate, the most common being standing on its rectangular platform. However, you can also perform squats or push-ups on it.
Wilson says vibration plates can move in multiple directions: up and down, side to side and front to back. The harmonic vibrations move between 25 to 50 times per second, activating the corresponding muscles.
Are there actual benefits to using vibration plates?
Yes, there are health benefits to using vibration plates. According to Verebes, some of the advantages may include “improved muscle tone and strength, better circulation, higher bone density, improved flexibility and balance, lymphatic drainage and the possibility of weight loss when paired with a healthy diet and regular exercise.”
However, experts agree that vibration plates offer the most benefits when used as part of an overall health and wellness plan. In other words, you shouldn’t expect to lose weight or increase muscle strength just by standing on a vibration plate — even if social media makes it seem so. Instead, experts suggest supplementing vibration exercise with other healthy habits, including a balanced diet and aerobic and strength training.
“Vibration plates are not a magic bullet or a replacement for traditional exercise,” warns Michael Betts, a personal trainer and director at TRAINFITNESS. “The benefits are modest and work best when combined with other forms of training.”
Still, research indicates that using vibration plates can have positive effects on your health. For example, one 2021 study looked at whether whole-body vibration training could improve muscle strength in older adults, concluding that it “may be an alternative exercise method to boost the effect of strengthening exercise.”
Similarly, a 2007 study investigated the effects of whole-body vibration training in men over 60 and found that it has the “potential to prevent or reverse the age-related loss in skeletal muscle mass, referred to as sarcopenia.”
For most, vibration plates are generally safe. However, like any other type of exercise, they come with a few potential risks, including “aggravation of existing conditions, temporary dizziness and joint stress if used incorrectly,” according to Betts.
There are also certain groups of people who should avoid using vibration plates altogether. “Vibration plates shouldn’t be used by anyone with cardiac or circulatory disorders, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pacemakers; pregnant women; people who have just had surgery; and people who have severe osteoporosis,” Verebes says.
“People with pre-existing disorders, including herniated discs, joint issues or acute inflammation, may experience worsening symptoms when using vibration plates,” she adds. “The vibrations may also be disconcerting to people who have inner ear problems or balance abnormalities.”
Verebes points out that “excessive use or high-intensity vibrations may strain ligaments, muscles or joints.”
Even if you don’t have one of these conditions, it’s still a good idea to talk to your doctor before getting on a vibration plate.
It’s also worth mentioning that a 2015 study discovered a link between regular exposure to whole-body vibration and a higher risk of lower back pain and sciatica. However, the participants in that study were regularly exposed to vibration as part of their jobs, so the results may not apply to vibration plate users.
How long and often should you use a vibration plate?
If you’re new to whole-body vibration training, it’s important to start slowly.
“To allow the body to adapt to vibrations, beginners should start with 5 to 10 minutes at a low intensity,” says Verebes. “Moderation is key, as excessive use may lead to fatigue or injury.”
As a beginner, it’s best to limit yourself to two to three sessions per week, says Betts. Over time, you can work toward longer and more frequent sessions. “As your body adapts, you can increase to 15- to 20-minute sessions up to 3 to 4 times a week,” he says. “Never go over 30 minutes, as this can cause fatigue and joint stress.”
For proper recovery, Betts also recommends leaving at least 24 hours between vibration plate sessions. “Listen to your body and adjust accordingly,” he advises. “Quality of movement matters more than duration.”

Exercises you can do on a vibration plate
To use a vibration plate, you can simply stand in place with slightly bent knees. You can also engage in other exercises — like squats or push-ups — while using the machine.
“Incorporating exercises such as squats, lunges, planks, push-ups and core workouts enhances results by engaging more muscle groups and boosting calorie burn,” says Verebes.
If you’re up to the challenge, here are three vibration plate exercises to try, as recommended by Wilson:
Push-ups
“Push-ups work your chest and shoulders — and doing them on a vibration plate activates many more muscle fibers per second than if you were to do them on the floor,” says Wilson.
To perform a push-up on a vibration plate, follow these steps:
Get into a high plank position by placing your palms flat on the platform and stretching your legs long behind you.
Lower into a push-up position slowly. Your chest should come close to touching the platform.
Perform three sets of 10 reps, taking 30 seconds of rest between each set.
High plank holds
You can also use a vibration plate to perform a high plank hold, which is “great for your core and upper body strength,” says Wilson. Here’s how:
Get into a high plank position by placing your palms flat on the platform and stretching your legs long behind you.
Hold for 30 seconds. Perform three sets, taking 15 seconds of rest between each set.
Tricep dips
“This exercise works the back of the arm as well as the shoulder,” says Wilson. “You’re going to experience much more muscle activation when doing it on a vibration plate machine.” Here’s how:
Sit on the edge of the platform.
Place your palms on the platform (just outside of your hips). Keep your feet flat on the ground with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle.
Scoot forward until you’re hovering in front of the platform, only supported by your arms and legs.
Lower your hips toward the ground by bending at the elbows, stopping when your elbows reach 90 degrees or when you can’t lower your hips further.
Push through your palms and return to the starting position.
Perform three sets of 10 reps, taking 30 seconds of rest between each set.

Do vibration plates work if you just stand on them?
You don’t need to perform exercises while using a vibration plate, but experts say moving your body — rather than standing still — will help you get more out of the machine.
“Actively moving while using the plate maximizes its benefits, even though simply standing on it can support circulation and balance,” says Verebes.
Betts agrees, adding: “Standing still on a vibration plate provides some stimulus through the muscle contractions, but adding movement increases the benefits. Static positions can help with circulation and muscle activation, but dynamic exercises will give you strength gains, balance improvements and overall training effects.”
If you’ve never used a vibration plate before, you could begin by standing in place or squatting while you’re on the machine. As you get more comfortable, you can incorporate different exercises and positions. Or you can alternate between standing still and exercising, suggests Betts.
“Combine both approaches — use static holds to build comfort and awareness, then move for optimal results,” he says. “Form and progression are key regardless of whether you’re moving or holding positions.”
The bottom line
Simply scrolling through social media, you might get the idea that vibration plates are an easy, low-commitment way to transform your body. While it’s true that vibration plates offer some compelling benefits, they aren’t a shortcut to fitness.
To get the best results from your vibration plate training, experts also recommend following a healthy diet and participating in other forms of exercise. It’s also a good idea to speak with your doctor before you start using a vibration plate — especially if you’ve had blood clots, joint issues or other health conditions.
A vibration plate can help you lose weight when paired with a balanced diet and regular exercise. However, standing on a vibration plate without exercise will not.
Vibration plates generate quick vibrations that contract and relax your body’s muscles several times per second, resembling at a greater frequency the spontaneous contractions that happen when you exercise normally. They can also move in multiple directions, activating different muscles.

Discover the best celebrations around North Texas this Fourth of July weekend. Events include fireworks shows, live music, parades and more.
DALLAS — As the Texas summer heats up, it can be tempting to stay indoors and revel in the marvel that is air conditioning.
But one birthday celebration in particular is an obvious exception. On Independence Day, Americans unite to light up the skies in honor of their country — and, as anyone from around here knows, North Texans know how to go big when celebrating the Fourth of July.
How big? Well, who wouldn’t pause their Netflix binge to witness one of the country’s most well-known fireworks shows? And that’s not all. Around the region, North Texans can enjoy all kinds of celebrations of America — from one of their city’s biggest block parties of the year to perfectly patriotic parades.
This year’s offerings are no different — except for the fact that, with July 4th being on a Friday this year, the party doesn’t have to stop; rather, the celebration can last all weekend long, with some events around the area spanning even through Sunday.
Whether you’re into fireworks shows, parades, live music performances or, of course, just filling up on some classic all-American food, this list will help make sure you don’t miss a beat this holiday weekend.

LONDON – Carlos Alcaraz kept his Wimbledon three-peat campaign chugging along by beating Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Centre Court on Friday to reach the fourth round.
Alcaraz extended his winning streak to 21 matches overall and 17 consecutive victories at the All England Club, where he has won the past two titles.
