Former NBA player Ben McLemore found guilty of rape in trial

Former NBA player Ben McLemore found guilty of rape in trial

The jury found former Portland Trail Blazer Ben McLemore guilty on three out of four charges, including first-degree rape.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The jury found former Portland Trail Blazer Ben McLemore guilty Thursday morning of rape and sexual abuse of a 21-year-old woman at a Lake Oswego house party in October 2021.

McLemore, 32, previously pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree rape, first-degree unlawful sexual penetration, and two counts of second-degree sexual abuse. The jury found him guilty on all counts, except one of the counts of sexual abuse.

The case went to the jury in Clackamas County on Tuesday afternoon following closing arguments by both sides. Prosecutors described the sexual encounter as rape, while the defense argued it was consensual.

The assault took place at the home of McLemore’s then-teammate, Robert Covington.

During the two-and-a-half-week trial, the woman testified she was incapacitated after a night of heavy drinking and unable to consent. McLemore admitted he had also been drinking but testified the sex was consensual. He told jurors there was no conversation between them before, during, or after the encounter, and he left the house immediately afterward.

In their final remarks to the jury on Tuesday, attorneys offered starkly different interpretations of the evidence.

“There’s absolutely no confusion in this case,” said Clackamas County prosecutor Scott Healy. “When you look at all the surrounding circumstances and you assess the evidence in this case, I submit to you that the defendant is guilty.”

Defense attorney Lisa Maxfield argued McLemore should be acquitted. “The only reasonable verdict in a case where two people get drunk and have sex and the man is drunker than the woman, the only reasonable verdict in a case like that is not guilty,” said Maxfield.

McLemore played one season with the Trail Blazers in 2021-2022 and has since played professionally overseas in Europe, China and Turkey.

LONDON – Top-ranked Jannik Sinner moved into Wimbledon’s third round with a 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Aleksandar Vukic of Australia at Centre Court on Thursday.

Sinner had 38 winners and just 11 unforced errors in the 1-hour, 40-minute match and saved all four break points he faced.

The owner of three Grand Slam titles advanced to face 52nd-ranked Pedro Martinez of Spain on Saturday.

Wimbledon is the only major tournament where Sinner has yet to reach a final; he lost in the 2023 semifinals at the All England Club.

He won the Australian Open each of the past two years, won the U.S. Open last September and was the runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the French Open last month. Sinner took the first two sets in that final and held three championship points before Alcaraz came back to win.

Daichi Miura Talks ‘Miraculous’ Effort of ‘Death Stranding 2’ Tracks, Perspective as a Longtime Video Game Aficionado: Interview

Daichi Miura Talks ‘Miraculous’ Effort of ‘Death Stranding 2’ Tracks, Perspective as a Longtime Video Game Aficionado: Interview

Daichi Miura dropped a double A-sided single called “Horizon Dreamer / Polytope” on June 25. Produced by Nao’ymt, who has collaborated with the J-pop singer and dancer on a number of his previous works, both “Horizon Dreamer” and “Polytope” are featured in DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH, the latest video game by world-renowned game creator Hideo Kojima. The 37-year-old pop star spoke to Billboard Japan about the creative process of both tracks and shared his enthusiasm for and longtime love of gaming in this latest interview.

“Horizon Dreamer” and “Polytope” were written for the video game DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH for PlayStation®︎5. The former is a track featuring a very primitive rhythm and melody.

Daichi Miura: The song has a very grounded feel to it, with a sound that evokes a scene of people walking through the wilderness step by step to reach a new land. It has a touch of bluegrass, with banjos and such, and the music has an indigenous, very physical feel to it. “Horizon Dreamer” was written with images of the game in mind, of course, but since I exist as Daichi Miura in the world of DS 2, Kojima-san said to me, “Don’t make it a song that expresses the world of the game too much. I’d like it to be one that stands on its own as a new single by Daichi Miura and also have proper strength as a pop song.” So Nao’ymt (pronounced “Nao why em tee”) wrote it as a new song for me, incorporating the essence and progress of my music up to now.

I see. Nao’ymt wrote and produced both songs. Could you share what you discussed with him in the beginning of the production process?

I’ve always loved playing video games, and had an opportunity to connect with Kojima-san through an interview during the production of (the first) DEATH STRANDING. As a fan of both Kojima-san and Nao-san, I’d been thinking that it was pretty clear the two of them should collaborate to create something together. Things began to take shape in a miraculous way for this project and we agreed to work together as a triangle.

So it was an eagerly anticipated triangle for you.

Right. I knew there were things that would definitely resonate between them, so I thought it’d be great if they’d connect. Oh, and there was this miracle that happened regarding “Horizon Dreamer.”

Tell us about it.

Kojima-san had told me he was working on DS 2, and shared that “this time there will be a ship that didn’t appear last time, and you’ll be traveling on it.” Around the same time, I received a demo from Nao-san, who said, “I had this image of a man who is floating in the sea, and then a ship comes and he gets on it and heads to a new land.” I thought it was miraculous and felt like I was witnessing an amazing moment. So I personally think that the two were meant to meet at some point, and it was through a combination of such miracles that “Horizon Dreamer” and “Polytope” were born.

You even host a TV show on video games, so your love for them is pretty well known. What do you think makes Kojima-san’s games so compelling?

What I’ve been thinking about regarding Kojima-san’s works recently is that he’s someone who’s relentless in his craftsmanship. When you’re making something, there will be moments when you go, “This might not work.” And you probably come up with various ideas and overcome those moments. The thing about Kojima-san is that there’s no compromise in the way he does that. The message that he wants to convey, the things he wants to create, the passion with which he wants to create things with certain people, the camera angles, the way he depicts things… it’s like that gene is in everything. I think he’s a really relentless person.

Going back to your music, how do you feel about the epic sound of “Horizon Dreamer”?

It was so incredibly cool from the demo stage. I just focused on how I should express the music. The two songs are completely different in tone, but they’re like a set with connected parts. As I mentioned earlier, “Horizon Dreamer” has an indigenous or primitive feel to it, but the way Nao-san breezily transformed that into a Daichi Miura pop song is really amazing.

How about “Polytope”?

I think Nao-san trusts me with what he really wants to do, and it’s one of those songs where he’s like, “Daichi will be able to handle this” and just goes full out with it. In that sense, “Polytope” couldn’t have been created without this triangle of the DS 2 project and Kojima-san’s presence, and from the moment I heard both songs, I was excited about how I’d go about expressing them.

You’ve already released “Horizon Dreamer“ digitally, and performed ”Polytope” live (ahead of the single’s release). How do you feel about the response?

I premiered the music and performance at my concert, but to be honest, I don’t remember much about “Polytope.” I was so focused on expressing it that there was no room for thought… like I was in harmony with the music. I only vaguely remember what I was thinking and how I expressed it. But I do remember that the atmosphere in the venue after the performance was pretty incredible and that the audience was buzzing with excitement. Apparently everyone felt like they’d seen something they’d never seen before, and that makes me happy.

“Horizon Dreamer” is a song that invites everyone to sing and dance together, so there might have been some confusion about the tone and performance of “Polytope.” Do you see those two songs as two sides of the same coin in terms of expression?

“Horizon Dreamer“ ends with the lyrics, ”The sun’s going down again today,” and “Polytope” begins, ”The sun’s setting,” so there’s a connection here. The staging of the live performance of “Polytope” also starts with a setting sun, so that’s also perfectly linked. While the songs depict different worlds from a sonic standpoint, I feel that their roots are the same, so it’s really like a gradation. I’d like people to listen to every part of the songs, especially “Polytope,” and wonder, “What’s this world like?” and experience them together with the game.

In your recent Instagram Live, you repeatedly said you wanted people to try playing DS 2.

I have a feeling that for a lot of people who don’t play video games, the rough idea of what they’re like actually hasn’t been updated for a long time. But they’re pretty incredible nowadays. Video games are the only kind of entertainment where you can play it yourself and control the main character. They contain elements of music, stories and drama, cinematic aspects, and are truly a comprehensive art form in my view. As a gamer and game fan, I feel pretty disappointed that so many people aren’t aware of this. I wish it would reach a wider audience somehow.

So, if there are people out there who know about me, and they found out about DEATH STRANDING 2 through me, then I’d really like them to try it out once. I’m sure you’ll be pretty amazed… I really encourage everyone to experience it.

Japanese video games are highly acclaimed around the world. Do you also want to introduce your music to a global audience along with DS 2?

I’ve never considered collaborating with a video game intending to reach a global audience through the game. I’m a fan of music, a fan of games, a fan of Kojima-san, and a fan of Nao-san, so it’s like I’m immersed in the joy of being able to devote all my energy to the things I love and to create something with all my might here. But  Kojima-san is someone who continues to create works that are loved by many players everywhere, so if people happen to find out about me through a game of his, of course I’d be very happy about it.

The 2 House Republicans who voted no on Trump’s sweeping domestic policy bill

The 2 House Republicans who voted no on Trump’s sweeping domestic policy bill

President Donald Trump’s major tax cut and spending bill passed the House on Thursday, but not without some Republican opposition.

Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania voted against the legislation alongside the entire House Democratic Caucus.

While Massie and Fitzpatrick were the only GOP members to vote no, several House GOP hardliners were angered by the changes made to the bill by the Senate and there was an overnight scramble by Speaker Mike Johnson to secure the necessary support to proceed. Some of the hardliners who ultimately voted yes say President Trump made promises to get their votes, including that he’d make the bill “better” in the future.

On Thursday, Massie said he did not vote for the bill because of its projected impact on the national debt. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated the bill could add $3.4 trillion to the deficit over the next decade.

“Although there were some conservative wins in the budget reconciliation bill (OBBBA), I voted No on final passage because it will significantly increase U.S. budget deficits in the near term, negatively impacting all Americans through sustained inflation and high interest rates,” Massie wrote on X. Massie also opposed the House version of the megabill that passed back in May.

Trump’s been a vocal critic of Massie, lambasting him last month in a lengthy social media post as not being “MAGA.”

“Actually, MAGA doesn’t want him, doesn’t know him, and doesn’t respect him,” Trump wrote at the time.

The president accused Massie of being a “grandstander” who routinely votes no on key Republican-led legislation. Trump suggested Massie should be challenged in the upcoming Republican primary, even before this latest vote.

“The good news is that we will have a wonderful American Patriot running against him in the Republican Primary, and I’ll be out in Kentucky campaigning really hard,” Trump wrote.

Rep. Fitzpatrick did vote for the House bill in May, but said on Thursday that the Senate changes to the bill (which resulted in deeper cuts to Medicaid) as the reason for his change in position.

As I’ve stated throughout these negotiations, with each iteration of legislative text that was placed on the House Floor, I’ve maintained a close and watchful eye on the specific details of these provisions, and determined the specific district impact, positive or negative, on our PA-1 community,” Fitzpatrick said in a statement.

“I voted to strengthen Medicaid protections, to permanently extend middle class tax cuts, for enhanced small business tax relief, and for historic investments in our border security and our military,” he added/ “However, it was the Senate’s amendments to Medicaid, in addition to several other Senate provisions, that altered the analysis for our PA-1 community. The original House language was written in a way that protected our community; the Senate amendments fell short of our standard.”

“I believe in, and will always fight for, policies that are thoughtful, compassionate, and good for our community. It is this standard that will always guide my legislative decisions,” Fitzpatrick said.

The Pennsylvania congressman, who also faces reelection in 2026, represents a swing district that went blue in 2024 for Kamala Harris.

Hunt on for gunman who killed congressional intern in DC

Hunt on for gunman who killed congressional intern in DC

Federal authorities are assisting D.C. police in investigating the shooting death of a 21-year-old congressional intern who was killed by a stray bullet in the District, the Metropolitan Police Department said Thursday.

The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are helping in the investigation as police search for the suspect who shot Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, of Granby, Massachusetts, on Monday night near the intersection of 7th and M Street.

Investigators said they recovered the suspect vehicle and stated that while the shooting was targeted, Tarpinian-Jachym was not among the intended victims.

A woman and a 16-year-old boy were also shot in the incident. The woman is in stable condition and the juvenile is believed to have been involved with the group that opened fire, according to police. He remains hospitalized with injuries.

D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith told reporters on Thursday, “We do have some good video footage, and I say good video footage that’s a little grainy, so we’re bringing in the FBI to kind of help enhance the video solution so we can see a little bit better.”

In the screen grab from Google Maps Street View, the Mount Vernon Square/7th Street – Convention Center Metro station is shown at the intersection of 7th Street and M Street in Washington, D.C.

Google Maps Street View

Police told reporters they have recovered the black Acura in a nearby jurisdiction that they were searching for in connection with this shooting. They are also working with the FBI to enhance the video and with the ATF on ballistics analysis.

Smith described the shooting as “a tragedy,” and “something that we don’t ever want to happen in our city.”

“We believe that the two groups had an altercation that did not result initially in gunfire. But what we do know is that at the location in the 1200 block of Seventh Street, northwest, is where the exchange of where the gunfire took place,” Smith said.

She added that D.C. police have not yet recovered a weapon.

Tarpinian-Jachym, who had been serving as an intern for Rep. Ron Estes of Kansas since June, was a rising senior at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he was majoring in finance with a minor in political science.

Shares of quickly growing consumer goods stock SharkNinja (SN 0.88%) rose 11% as of market close Thursday, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. The product design and technology company, famous for its consumer goods products seen on numerous infomercials and social media clips, received a $175 price target from Jefferies on Monday, which sent its stock higher.

Compared to its current stock price of $107, this price target implies upside north of 60%. Just one week removed from being added to Time magazine’s 2025 list of the 100 Most Influential Companies, this upgrade added further optimism to SharkNinja’s stock, which is now up 150% since its initial public offering in 2023.

SharkNinja: More than the infomercials you’ve seen

Anchored by its two billion-dollar brands (Shark and Ninja), SharkNinja is a product design and technology innovation hub, home to over 5,200 patents that serve its consumer goods customers. The company, describing itself as “maniacally consumer-focused,” operates in (and disrupts) 36 subcategories (such as robot vacuums, air purifiers, blenders, or air fryers) by iterating products to the nth degree to reach unparalleled customer satisfaction.

Thanks to its relentless pursuit of customer satisfaction and burgeoning popularity, SharkNinja commands a premium price for its “aspirational brands,” slightly ahead of more commoditized peers.

After growing sales by 24% annually since 2018, management has conservatively guided for 12% revenue growth in 2025. More importantly, however, management expects earnings per share of $4.95 for the year, which leaves SharkNinja shares trading at a reasonable 21 times forward earnings.

With the company entering 15 new subcategories over the last three years — while launching roughly 25 new products annually — SharkNinja’s long-standing innovation prowess looks poised to power the stock to new highs.

EPA Employees Called on the Agency to Stop Undermining Public Health. The Trump Administration Put Them on Leave – Inside Climate News

EPA Employees Called on the Agency to Stop Undermining Public Health. The Trump Administration Put Them on Leave – Inside Climate News

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency placed 139 employees on administrative leave Thursday, an agency spokesperson confirmed, after they signed a “Stand Up for Science” petition using their official titles and EPA positions.

The affected employees received an email, shared with Inside Climate News, informing them that they are on leave through July 17, pending an investigation into whether they used work time or resources when signing the petition.

The email emphasizes that “this is not a disciplinary action.”

One employee, who asked not to be named, said they signed the petition “on a Sunday on my own device.”

“I’d be shocked if anyone used work resources,” the employee went on. “We’ve taken ethics training and are aware of the law.”

We’re hiring!

Please take a look at the new openings in our newsroom.

See jobs

While the employees are on leave, they are prohibited from using government equipment, including cell phones, logging into government-issued computers, contacting any EPA employees for access to information and performing any official EPA duties.

An EPA spokesperson wrote in an email that the agency “has a zero-tolerance policy for career bureaucrats unlawfully undermining, sabotaging, and undercutting the administration’s agenda as voted for by the great people of this country last November.”

The EPA also alleged that the petition contains misleading information, but did not specify what is incorrect.

The petition, addressed to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and members of Congress, is a “declaration of dissent” with the administration’s policies, “including those that undermine the EPA mission of protecting human health and the environment.”

“Since the Agency’s founding in 1970, EPA has accomplished this mission by leveraging science, funding, and expert staff in service to the American people,” the petition reads. “Today, we stand together in dissent against the current administration’s focus on harmful deregulation, mischaracterization of previous EPA actions, and disregard for scientific expertise.”

More than 200 EPA employees, including retirees, signed the petition, some of them only by initials. The document criticizes the agency for “undermining the public trust” by issuing misleading statements in press releases, such as referring to EPA grants as “green slush funds” and praising “clean coal as beautiful.”

The petition also accuses the administration of “ignoring scientific consensus to benefit polluters,” most notably regarding asbestos, mercury and greenhouse gases

Health-based regulatory standards are being repealed or reconsidered, including drinking water limits for four PFAS “forever chemicals” that cause cancer

“The decisions of the current administration frequently contradict the peer-reviewed research and recommendations of Agency experts. Such contradiction undermines EPA’s reputation as a trusted scientific authority. Make no mistake: your actions endanger public health and erode scientific progress—not only in America—but around the world.”

Signatories also lambasted the EPA for reversing progress on environmental justice, including the cancellation of billions of grant dollars to underserved communities and the removal of EJScreen, a mapping analysis tool that allowed the public to see pollution sources, neighborhood demographics and health data.

“These are trumped-up charges against EPA employees because they made a political statement the Trump administration did not like.”

— Nicole Cantello, American Federation of Government Employees

The petition also opposes the dismantling of the Office of Research and Development, whose work forms the scientific basis for federal rulemaking.

Nicole Cantello is president of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Union Local 704, and leader of AFGE Council 238, a nationwide union that represents over 8,000 EPA employees.

She said the EPA’s allegations are baseless.

“These are trumped-up charges against EPA employees because they made a political statement the Trump administration did not like,” Cantello said. “Now the Trump administration is retaliating against them.”

Cantello said the union will fight for the employees on several legal grounds, including First Amendment protections and employment contractual rights. “We’ll be using all of them to defend our people,” she said.

Matthew Tejada, the former director of the EPA’s environmental justice program and currently senior vice president of environmental health at the Natural Resources Defense Council, blasted the Trump administration for going after the EPA employees who signed the letter.

These civil servants, he said, were “totally within their rights” to speak out. “This is a public declaration by those employees that they continue to fight to do their jobs to help people across this country live healthier, safer, more prosperous lives,” Tejada said.

Tejada emphasized that the individuals involved were not working in coordination with advocacy groups, but acting independently in defense of the agency’s mission and the public interest.

He called the administration’s reaction “another indication that this administration is unique in modern times for having zero regard for the Constitution, for protecting and supporting the people of the United States.”

“We are in completely unprecedented waters here,” Tejada said.
