The bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence began early for many Americans. On a chilly December morning in 1973, a reenactment of the Boston Tea Party, sponsored by the City of Boston, transformed into protests over contemporary concerns. Barrels labeled “Gulf Oil,” “Exxon,” and “Shell” were tossed into the harbor to denounce environmental destruction. Marchers carried signs condemning the war in Vietnam and the then recent coup in Chile. Chants of “Down with King George” mingled with “Down with King Richard,” ensuring that President Richard Nixon, then facing the Watergate scandal and the resignation of his vice president Spiro Agnew, would not be forgotten.

Neither the civil rights movement nor the New Left and its various offshoots, including the People’s Bicentennial Commission, identified the Constitution as the main obstacle to progressive policies.
But much has changed. Today constitutional veneration is nowhere near as strong as it was when the Freedom Train and Preamble Express were chugging across the country. In fact, the Constitution’s role in our current political crisis and rising authoritarianism has become “a kind of truism, both within the sort of left of center constitutional law academy, and also . . . the commentariat more generally,” says Rana. “That’s a big shift.”
Martin Luther King Jr called the Declaration of Independence’s universalist promise of equal rights a “promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.” Yet that promise has yet to materialize. Two hundred and fifty years since the Declaration was written, we still lack a constitution based on universal suffrage, equal representation, and enforceable social rights such as affordable health care, equal pay for equal work, and self-determination for indigenous peoples. The American Revolution might have helped bring about the downfall of kings, aristocracy, serfdom, and eventually slavery, but it did not lead to a political system in which “we the people” rule.
Next year will bring a deluge of hymns to America and its founding documents. But we should really be talking about the need for a new democratic founding that will allow for actual majoritarian rule: a constitution that places supreme authority in a single federal legislature (elected through universal and equal suffrage) and establishes civil and political rights for all. Two hundred and fifty years without democracy is long enough.

Bookmakers got what they wanted from the Gold Cup odds market: USA vs. Mexico, in Houston, in a championship showdown capping the Fourth of July weekend.
At 7 p.m. ET Sunday on FOX, the U.S. Men’s National Team and El Tri square off.
“This is definitely the match we want. I’d say Mexico is the USA’s biggest rival,” BetMGM Nevada’s Scott Shelton said Friday evening.

Mexico Moves To Favorite
On Wednesday, Team USA got two Diego Luna goals in the first 15 minutes and made that hold up in a 2-1 semifinal victory over Guatemala. Mexico followed with a 1-0 victory over Honduras.
Then BetMGM Nevada posted the three-way odds for Sunday’s title tilt, declaring it a toss-up: Mexico +170/USA +170, with the draw at +200.
But our neighbors to the south have since moved to the favorite.
“Ticket-wise, there’s literally one more ticket on the U.S. than on Mexico. But money-wise, it’s 3/1 on Mexico. Draw only has a handful of tickets,” Shelton said.
With that action, Mexico is now a modest +145 favorite, with the U.S. at +190 and draw at +210. What that means: If you put a $100 bet on Team USA, and the Americans win, then you profit $190 (total payout $290) if the U.S. wins within 90 minutes plus injury time.
And that’s important to note.
If you were to bet the U.S. on the three-way market, that bet doesn’t extend to overtime/penalty kicks. So if the U.S. went on to win in overtime or on penalties, your ticket would be a loser.
To avoid that possibility, you might want to consider the two-way “To Lift The Trophy” market, in which Mexico is -135 and USA is even money (+100). Then your bet is live, regardless of whether the game ends in regulation or goes to overtime/penalty kicks.

As is often the case in soccer, and particularly in high-profile international matches, BetMGM Nevada would love to see the U.S. and Mexico tied after 90 minutes plus injury time.
“By kickoff, we’re gonna need a draw. That will end up being our best-case scenario,” Shelton said. “Mexico will be just as heavily bet as USA.”
So, ostensibly, bookmakers are rooting for Sunday’s match to go to overtime, and even to penalty kicks if possible. That’s certainly what Caesars Sports is hoping for, along with a win from the Red, White & Blue on this Fourth of July weekend.
“Draws are always a book-friendly result,” Caesars head of soccer trading Mark Bickerdike said. “The U.S. ultimately getting the job done, preferably on penalties, would be the most favorable for the book.”

KERRVILLE, Texas – Officials say at least 20 Camp Mystic campers are missing after catastrophic flooding in Kerr County.
Families and others are posting on social media asking for help locating the girls.
The backstory:
On Friday, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said at least 20 campers were missing from Camp Mystic.
Camp Mystic is an all-girls camp located in Hunt, Texas, along the Guadalupe River.
Speaking at a news conference Friday, Patrick said the river rose 26 feet in 45 minutes.
According to a message sent to parents, campers and staff were being taken from the camp by helicopter to a school in Ingram, Texas.
Camp Mystic officials said all Cypress Lake campers and campers on senior hill were accounted for and that the parents of the missing children have been notified.
A massive rescue response has been mobilized in response to the flooding.
Patrick said nine rescue teams consisting of between 400-500 people were on the ground.
Fourteen helicopters are also involved in rescue operations.
SEATTLE – On the spot, Cal Raleigh compiled a laundry list of players he would consider for a Mount Rushmore of Seattle Mariners following their 6-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Friday.
Ichiro was one of the first names off the board, followed by the likes of stud starting pitchers Felix Hernandez and Randy Johnson. When identifying who is the face of the Mariners, though, Raleigh immediately landed on Ken Griffey Jr., who he tied for the franchise record for home runs before the All-Star break with 35 with a pair of blasts.
“To be mentioned with that name, somebody that’s just iconic, a legend, first ballot Hall of Famer, I’m just blessed,” Raleigh said. “Trying to do the right thing and trying to keep it rolling. If I can try to be like that guy, it’s a good guy to look up to.”
From Raleigh’s perspective, Griffey would have “smashed” the major league home run record rather than come up 132 short of Barry Bonds if not for injuries. Thankfully for Raleigh’s sake, that admiration hasn’t been reserved for the public eye.
Whenever Griffey finds himself back in Seattle, which was the case when FIFA Club World Cup games were taking place at Lumen Field, Raleigh has enjoyed his chats with “The Kid.”
“It’s always fun to have him around the clubhouse to just talk to him a little bit and figure out how he went about his business,” Raleigh said. “So, I’ve talked to him on the phone once or twice as well. So, he’s a good one. He’s one of the best of all-time. It’s hard to beat talking to somebody like that.”
It’s also hard to find many comparable runs to what Raleigh — who will participate in the Home Run Derby — is in the midst of, and what Griffey accomplished ahead of the 1998 All-Star break. Manager Dan Wilson, who was a teammate of Griffey’s in 1998, is among the few folks who can truly put Raleigh’s fast start to 2025 in perspective.
“It’s remarkable. It feels like he hits a home run every game, that’s what it feels like,” Wilson said. “And I can remember feeling it as a player, that (Griffey) just felt like he hit a home run every day. Again, that’s the consistency that (Raleigh) has shown. It hasn’t been a streak where he has hit a bunch of home runs in a short amount of time. It’s been kind of 10 per month.”
To Wilson’s point, Raleigh has been remarkably consistent. He walloped nine home runs in April, 12 in May and 11 more in June. Griffey’s figures were a tad more mercurial, but just barely (10 in April, eight in May, 14 in June).
All told, the 28-year-old Raleigh has more than lived up to the early stages of his six-year, $105 million contract extension, which he signed just ahead of the 2025 season. Not only has Raleigh set a career high for home runs, but he’s on track to post new marks for batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
Raleigh chalked those developments up to his maturing a little over halfway into his fourth full major league season.
“I have the ability to drive the ball out of the ballpark,” Raleigh said. “I mean, it’s part of my game and I’m a strong guy. It’s learning how to hone it in and take your hits when maybe you’re not getting those pitches in the heart of the plate.”
Such an approach is all well and good, but the results have been starkly different. Raleigh has racked up just 36 singles, or one more than his home run total. Suffice to say, Raleigh’s offensive output has justified every dollar the Mariners have sent his way so far, and then some.
“Want to make sure I’m doing everything I can every single day to earn that paycheck and earn what they gave me,” Raleigh said. “But it’s a lot more than just that. It’s being a leader, doing things in the clubhouse and making sure you’re ready to go every single day.”

Remember the night Trump’s first reconciliation bill failed and we saved the Affordable Care Act?
I do. It was July 28, 2017.
After months of nonstop calls, packed town halls, and rallies in blistering Arizona heat, every sign pointed to defeat. Republicans appeared to have the votes to kill Obamacare, and we had our “we lost” email written, proofed, and ready to send. But we should have known better.
Because in those months, weeks, and days leading up to that vote, Indivisibles never stopped fighting.
Activists like you showed up at Susan Collins’ Fourth of July parades with signs and bullhorns. You stood outside John McCain’s Phoenix office in 100-degree heat. You flooded the Senate with calls. And at 1:29am that July morning, McCain gave the most famous thumbs-down in Senate history — joining Collins and Murkowski to kill Trumpcare for good.
That wasn’t luck. That was power — your power. We fought until the gavel fell, and we changed the course of history.
So, why am I telling you this story?
Simple.
Moments ago, almost 8 years to the day after we killed Trumpcare, the Senate passed Trump’s Medicaid-slashing, billionaire-enriching, big ugly bill. Republicans are celebrating, and we understand if you’re feeling angry and deflated. Lord knows, we’re angry.
But this fight isn’t over. Not by a long shot.
You’ve already moved the needle. You made Medicaid the defining issue of the debate. Senator Thom Tillis broke with Trump on national TV, called out the cruelty of this bill, and announced he wouldn’t seek re-election rather than betray his state’s Medicaid recipients. That didn’t happen in a vacuum — it happened because North Carolinians showed up, called in, rallied at Hands Off events, and refused to let him look away.
The bill now heads back to the House, where Republicans can only afford to lose three votes. It barely squeaked by with a single-vote margin the first time, and it’s only gotten more divisive since:
The so-called deficit hawks are fuming about the $3 trillion this adds to the debt.
Vulnerable “moderates” understand that ripping health insurance away from 17 million people and kicking 11.8 million more off SNAP in order to shovel $4.5 trillion to the ultra-rich might not be a winning message back home.
Anyone who tells you this is a done deal doesn’t know what the hell they’re talking about.
Is it an uphill battle? Yes. But so was 2017.
So no matter where you live or who your Member of Congress is, here’s what you can do right now:
Get a group of friends and neighbors together and plan a District Office Visit for as soon as possible. There’s no getting around it: in-person action is more impactful than phone calls and emails. That means it’s time to show up on your home turf and tell your Republican representative to vote no. Here’s a toolkit to get started and a Mobilize link to register your event so others can find it and attend with you! The sooner the better — and don’t overthink it!
Flood the phones. Tell your representative that a vote for this bill is a vote to destroy lives — and you’ll remember it. Once you make the call (no, but really, you need to make the call because they’re more impactful than emails), send an email to drive home the point.
Then, knock on 5 of your neighbors’ doors and ask them to call. When you sign up, we’ll send you the addresses for five like-minded neighbors near you, a sample script, and flyers to leave behind so they can take action to fight back against the Republican tax scam.
