‘I hope you boys do every bit of time you deserve’ | Cousin of man killed by bounty hunters says he was trying to get his life back on track

‘I hope you boys do every bit of time you deserve’ | Cousin of man killed by bounty hunters says he was trying to get his life back on track

Drew Knowles, originally from Arkansas, had recently moved to the city with hopes of starting a new chapter.

DALLAS, Texas — On a day that should have been filled with family and celebration, Cody Beck is instead grieving the loss of his cousin, 33-year-old Drew Knowles.

“To lose your life over something that seems so minor, it’s just upsetting, man,” Beck said. “Cousin is a word I use for him sometimes, but really, that dude was my brother,” Beck said.

Dallas police said two suspects are charged with murder after shooting Knowles in Downtown Dallas during an attempted apprehension.

Knowles, originally from Arkansas, had recently moved to the city with hopes of starting a new chapter.

According to sources, the two men identified as Rodney Brown, 34, and Jorge Moncivais, 23, claimed to be bounty hunters attempting to take Knowles into custody for a bond violation tied to a felony theft charge. On Friday, jail records say Brown and Moncivais have been released on bond.

The arrest affidavit says the two suspects boxed Knowles in with their vehicles. Brown reportedly exited his vehicle with a gun drawn and approached Knowles’ car.

As Knowles tried to drive away, both men reportedly opened fire. According to police, Knowles crashed into a light pole shortly after and died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.

The affidavit disputes the suspects’ claim that they were in danger. The affidavits says the complainant was not a threat and the suspects were not in danger of being run over.

“Who wouldn’t be scared of two random cars he didn’t know blocking him in — and then on top of that, gunshots being fired?” Beck said.

WFAA has confirmed that the two suspects were not authorized to carry weapons while acting as bounty hunters.

While grieving, Beck said his family is still processing how something so violent and sudden could happen over what they believe was a nonviolent warrant.

“He was aware of what he had going on,” Beck said. “He was just trying to buy himself a little more time.”

Now, the family is left hoping the justice system holds the suspects accountable.

“I hope them guys are realizing what they’ve done. I hope they realize, ‘wow, we made a mistake,’” Beck said. “Truly, I hope, with not too much animosity built up in me, I hope you boys do every bit of time you deserve.”

Oasis’ First Official Reunion Show Features Rarities + Favorites – See Photos, Setlist + Video

Oasis’ First Official Reunion Show Features Rarities + Favorites – See Photos, Setlist + Video

Oasis have officially made their live return just shy of 16 years after their tumultuous split. After years of public bickering through social media and interviews, the brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher managed to mend their fractured relationship and announced their reunion last year to mark the 30th anniversary of their (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? album.

The first performance of their Live ’25 tour took place at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales on Friday (July 4), which was their first performance since their unexpected final show Aug. 22, 2009 at the V Festival in England. The group canceled their performance the following day and then on Aug. 28, 2009, Noel Gallagher showed up prior to the band’s performance at the Rock En Seine festival in Paris to share his intent to leave the band.

The remaining members initially toured and recorded under the moniker Beady Eye until Liam Gallagher followed in Noel Gallagher’s footsteps and launched his own solo career.

What Did Oasis Play at Their First Reunion Concert?

Not only did the Oasis reunion feature Liam and Noel Gallagher, but the reunion lineup featured guitarists Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs and Gem Archer, bassist Andy Bell and newcomer Joey Waronker on drums. In addition, days ahead of the first show it was revealed that the core group would be accentuated by Christian Madden on keyboards, Jess Greenfield doing backing vocals, Alastair Whire on trombone, Steve Hamilton on saxophone and Joe Auckland on trumpet.

The band arrived onstage to the familiar sounds of a tape playing their song “Fuckin’ in the Bushes.” Noel and Liam embraced hands to the sky as the backdrop informed fans “This is happening.”

From there, they launched into “Hello,” the opening track from their (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? album. The song had not be played in concert since 2002. That was quickly followed by another long absent track as popular b-side “Acquiesce” returned to the set for the first time since 2006.

Throughout the set, the band dug deeper into their catalog. “Some Might Say” (first time since 2002), “Bring It On Down” (first time since 2006), “Talk Tonight” (first time since 2005), “Little By Little” (first time since 2005), “D’You Know What I Mean” (first time since 2002), “Stand By Me” (first time since 2001) and “Cast No Shadow” (first time since 2002) made long-awaited returns to the band’s setlist.

One of the more notable acknowledgments of the evening came when the band flashed the jersey of Diogo Jota during their performance of “Live Forever.” The 28-year-old soccer player for the Liverpool Football Club was killed alongside his brother in a car crash in Spain on Thursday (July 3).

After a brief respite, the band returned to the stage for an encore that included “The Masterplan,” “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” “Wonderwall” and “Champagne Supernova.”

Man dead after bloody shoot-out with sheriff’s deputies in East L.A.

Man dead after bloody shoot-out with sheriff’s deputies in East L.A.

A man was shot and killed in East L.A. during an alleged shoot-out with Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies.

On Friday at about 4:24 a.m., deputies responded to a call of shots fired in the 1500 block of Helen Drive, an unincorporated residential neighborhood in Los Angeles near the interchange of the 10 and 710 freeways.

The caller said a man was shooting into the air, according to a sheriff’s report released Friday afternoon. When deputies located the suspect, he allegedly started firing at the deputies.

The deputies returned fire, hitting the suspect, who fell to the ground and allegedly continued to shoot, according to CBS News Los Angeles.

Deputies eventually were able to approach the downed suspect. Paramedics were called, rendered medical aid and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

His identity has not been released, and the motive for the shooting is under investigation.

News helicopter footage showed a crime scene with a blurred-out image of the body on the street, which appeared to be pooled with blood. More than a dozen yellow evidence markers noted where bullet casings fell during the shoot-out.

No deputies were injured, and multiple investigations are now underway following protocol after a person is struck by gunfire in an officer-involved shooting.

The Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau are conducting separate investigations. The Office of the Inspector General also arrived on scene and will provide independent oversight throughout the process.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call “Crime Stoppers” by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477) or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org.

Why Netflix Stock Jumped 11% in June | The Motley Fool

Why Netflix Stock Jumped 11% in June | The Motley Fool

Netflix (NFLX 0.92%) stock gained 11% in June, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. It received several analyst upgrades, it made some celebrated announcements, and it also seems to be rising on the coattails of Apple‘s success with its hit film F1: The Movie.

The Trillion-dollar stock

Netflix has been having another moment. Despite tons of new competition and a changing streaming landscape, it has remained in the top streaming spot, which is a real feat. It speaks to the company’s excellent management and foresight, and it bodes well for the company’s future potential as it successfully adapts, changes, and leads.

In the 2025 first quarter, revenue increased 13% year over year, and operating income was up 27%. Operating margin improved from 28.1% to 33.3%, and earnings per share (EPS) increased from $5.28 to $7.03. The company has stopped reporting subscriber count, but it had more than 300 million paid subscribers at the end of 2024.

Ad revenue from its relatively new ad-supported tier is still a small portion of total revenue, but management is expecting it to double this year. It’s also guiding for “healthy” subscriber growth and some price increases, and it maintained its full-year guidance despite continued pressure in the environment, boosting market confidence.

The strong results and improving streaming have led to several recent analyst upgrades, and the stock is rising as a result. It’s also benefiting from an overall improving market, with the S&P 500 index up 5% last month.

Toward the end of June, Netflix stock surged on the day Apple’s new hit film, F1:The Movie, hit theaters. That suggests that streaming tech giants can produce theater-level quality films that can be hits at the box office. Netflix has had some limited theater runs, but it doesn’t seem to have plans to make this a major part of its model.

To top off the month, it got another round of applause after NASA announced that it would stream rocket launches on Netflix starting this summer.

Can Netflix stock go higher?

Management recently boasted that it believes it can reach a $1 trillion valuation by 2030. That implies nearly doubling — which may or may not happen — but Netflix has demonstrated resilience and innovation over many years, and it’s likely to keep changing with the times and offer value for shareholders.

Independence Day And The Statue Of Liberty Chains Explained

Independence Day And The Statue Of Liberty Chains Explained

rorem

Independence Day can be pleasurable for some and a cold reminder of a hard truth for others. Majority of America takes the federal holiday off from work to grill, go to the pool, find a day party to wear their best red, white and blue outfit to or simply use the day to reflect on living in what some would call the greatest country in the world. Others will argue that we’re living in times of turmoil, and letting off fireworks for fun here in our country while the government is letting off bombs in another country doesn’t seem like something worth celebrating. For Black America, it can feel like a triple whammy.

Take the history of the Statue of Liberty for example, easily the greatest symbol of our freedom and independence and a diverse nation. Sure, it’s a monument that all immigrants can look to for inspiration, but rarely is it included when the story of Lady Liberty is told about the shackles at her feet that originally were meant to hang from her hands as a direct call to the end of slavery in America.

Let the astounding Dr. Joy DeGruy break it down for you below in a clip taken here from interview earlier this year on the Vault Empowers podcast hosted by Brandi Harvey:

RELATED: Rap Songs That Hit Different on the 4th of July

It’s almost impossible to believe that so many, particularly African American New Yorkers, are completely unaware of what the Statue Of Liberty truly stands for. It’s why entertainers who use their platform for change like Beyoncé are so appreciated in the culture. Many might’ve saw her Lady Liberty-inspired Cowboy Carter Tour outfit at Stade de France in Paris as just another eye-grabbing concoction by Balmain. King Bey’s mind works different though, as she purposefully wore gold bagels around her wrists and gold Amina Muaddi shoes on her feet to signify that aforementioned oversight while also paying respect to the French sculptor who designed it as a gift for America. It’s been heavily rumored that his original design of the woman at the center of it all was envisioned with more African features.

Overall, knowledge will always equal power when it comes to our culture. It may not mean much to many, but simply acknowledging those chains — even if you have to squint and jump to see them! — can be a catalyst to discovering even more about the richness and strength in being Black.

May your Fourth be enjoyed with pride, knowledge and understanding of self.

Deadspin | Fluminense eliminate Al Hilal to reach Club World Cup semis

Substitute Hercules scored his second goal in as many second-half appearances to lift Fluminense into the FIFA Club World Cup semifinals with a 2-1 quarterfinal win over Al Hilal on Friday in Orlando, Fla.

Martinelli also scored late in the first half to continue a fabulous tournament for the Rio de Janeiro club and Brazil overall. Tuesday’s semifinal could be an all-Brazilian affair if Palmeiras defeat Chelsea in Friday night’s second quarterfinal in Philadelphia.

Al Hilal exits despite a fourth tournament goal for striker Marcos Leonardo, who was in for the injured Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The Saudi side was the last from Asia remaining, having pulled off the tournament’s biggest upset with a 4-3, extra-time victory over Manchester City in the second round on Monday.

Hercules put Fluminense in front for good in the 70th when he was rewarded for his own persistence.

After his first long-range shot was deflected high into the air, he continued his run forward as teammate Samuel Xavier won the next header.

It landed at the feet of Hercules, whose wonderful first touch put him in shooting position before his second sent a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner, prompting jubilation from yet another pro-Brazilian crowd at this tournament.

Al Hilal pressured Fluminense in the dying stages, but couldn’t create a clear look on Fabio’s goal.

Martinelli put Fluminense in front in the 40th minute on a brilliant strike. His first touch took Gabriel Fuentes’ pass beyond a charging Al Hilal defender, and his second unleashed a ferocious left-footed shot that beat goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to the top right corner from about 15 yards.

A minute into first-half stoppage time, Fluminense keeper Fabio sprawled to his left to push Kalidou Koulibaly’s powerful header beyond the post.

After nearly leveling before halftime, Koulibaly won another dangerous header six minutes into the second from a corner.

This time it landed at the feet of Leonardo, who balanced himself and scooped a finish from close range past Fabio and two defenders on the line.

It remained level four minutes later when Bounou sprawled to his right to take the ball off the feet of German Cano trying to round him on the dribble after intercepting a pass deep in the attacking half.

Liverpool FC and Portugal national team star Diogo Joto and his brother Andre Silva, who died Thursday in Spain in a car accident, were honored with a pregame moment of silence.

Cameras showed Al Hilal starters and Portuguese compatriots Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo fighting off tears during the observance.

Ready-made stem cell therapies for pets could be coming | TechCrunch

Ready-made stem cell therapies for pets could be coming | TechCrunch

Earlier this week, San Diego startup Gallant announced $18 million in funding to bring the first FDA-approved ready-to-use stem cell therapy to veterinary medicine. If it passes regulatory muster, it could create a whole new way to treat our fur babies.

It’s still an experimental field, even though people have been researching stem cells for humans for decades. Seven-year-old Gallant’s first target is a painful mouth condition in cats called Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS), which Gallant says could receive FDA approval by early 2026.

The field has shown some encouraging early results. Studies on dogs with arthritis showed improvements in pain and mobility, with some benefits lasting up to two years. But when researchers tried similar treatments for kidney disease in cats — that’s another condition Gallant wants to tackle — the results were more mixed.

What makes Gallant’s approach different is convenience. Most stem cell treatments today require harvesting cells from the patient or donors with matching tissue, whereas Gallant’s therapy uses ready-to-use cells from donor animals, even if they are a different species.

Investors clearly see potential here. The funding round was led by existing backer Digitalis Ventures, with participation from NovaQuest Capital Management, which previously invested in the first FDA-approved human stem cell therapy.

The company has an interesting backstory. Gallant’s founder, Aaron Hirschhorn, previously sold DogVacay to its biggest rival in the dog-sitting marketplace, Rover. Hirschhorn passed away in 2021; Gallant is now led by Linda Black, who joined as its president and chief scientific officer from nearly the beginning. Gallant has now raised at least $44 million altogether from investors.

Cubs break franchise record with 8 home runs, 3 by Michael Busch

Cubs break franchise record with 8 home runs, 3 by Michael Busch

CHICAGO – Michael Busch and the Chicago Cubs turned their holiday into a home run.

Eight of them, to be exact.

Busch hit three longballs, Pete Crow-Armstrong connected twice and the Cubs went deep a franchise-record eight times to hammer the St. Louis Cardinals 11-3 on Friday for their fourth straight victory.

“It was just a fun game to be a part of,” Busch said. “Baseball is kind of a July Fourth kind of deal and especially to do it in Wrigley Field and have just so much excitement in the game — that was one I’ll never forget.”

The fireworks started long before sunset in front of 40,038 fans at Wrigley.

Busch went 4 for 4 with five RBIs in his first career three-homer performance and second multihomer game. His second drive of the day hit the right-field video board, just after Crow-Armstrong reached it.

“I think that’s the little side effect of baseball,” Busch said. “You get in there just trying to have good at-bats and try to win the game, but when things like that happen, it’s cool.

“You grow up dreaming of playing in the big leagues and to be able to do it and then, you know, to stitch your name in the Chicago Cubs record books is pretty cool.”

The eight longballs allowed by St. Louis also broke a club mark.

The 27-year-old Busch has rounded into a reliable everyday first baseman for the Cubs following a January 2024 trade from the Dodgers that largely went under the radar. He came to Chicago with right-hander Yency Almonte in a deal that sent prospects Jackson Ferris and Zyhir Hope to Los Angeles.

Busch played 152 games last season for the Cubs, batting .248 with 21 homers and 65 RBIs. This year, he’s upped his average to .288 with 17 homers and 55 RBIs in 82 games.

“He’s turned into a really great offensive player,” manager Craig Counsell said. “Last year it felt like there was kinds of ups and downs during the season. And this year, you know, he has lengthened the ups and shortened the downs.”

Crow-Armstrong also went 4 for 4 and Dansby Swanson launched a two-run homer for Chicago. Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly added solo shots as the NL Central leaders hit six homers in the first three innings off Miles Mikolas (4-6), a record for most home runs off a Cardinals pitcher in one game.

“We just did an extremely good job at being aggressive in the zone and it was just kind of our day,” Busch said. “You know, we don’t really miss in the zone and I think when that happens, we’re a very scary ballteam.”
