‘Selling’ the megabill: Republicans tout taxes, Democrats point to Medicaid cuts

‘Selling’ the megabill: Republicans tout taxes, Democrats point to Medicaid cuts

Fresh off a bruising fight over passage of President Donald Trump’s massive tax and policy bill, Republicans and Democrats are now waging a battle over selling it to Americans.

Trump celebrated the passage of the bill during a rally in Iowa on Thursday.

“Every major promise I made to the people of Iowa in 2024 became a promise kept,” he said of the bill’s passage.

Republicans see a lot to celebrate after weeks of delicate negotiations to get both chambers on the same page, with little room for error.

The package of $4.5 trillion in tax breaks would make permanent the tax code changes Trump signed into law during his first term, and include new campaign pledges, such as no taxes on tips for some workers, and a ‘senior deduction’ of $6,000 for older Americans making up to $75,000 annually.

It also includes billions in new defense spending and $350 billion for border security and immigration enforcement, to advance the administration’s mass deportation efforts.

“Republicans should be proud of passing this bill, because it delivers on a lot of the things that they ran on, and that the president ran on,” Mark Bednar, a Republican strategist who served as an aide to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., told ABC News. “That’s what Republicans would be very wise to lean in on, going into this recess, going into August and the following year.”

Democrats searching for a message after last November have seized on the package’s gradual changes to safety net programs, such as Medicaid and food stamps — though a combination of work requirements and tax changes.

Nearly 12 million Americans would lose health coverage, and 3 million would not receive SNAP benefits under the legislation, according to initial estimates from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

Overall, the CBO estimated the measure would add $3.4 trillion to the deficit over the next decade.

Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who spoke against the bill on the House floor for nearly nine hours Thursday, told the stories of Americans who he said could be impacted by safety net cuts.

“Shame on the people who’ve decided to launch that kind of all-out assault on the health and the well-being of everyday Americans,” he said.

For their part, Republicans have challenged estimates of the overall impact of the package on the national debt. And they have argued that work requirements, if implemented properly, would weed out abuse in safety net programs.

According to a June poll from Quinnipiac University, 29% of voters supported the bill, while 55% opposed it.

The same poll showed that registered voters were evenly split on the issue of work requirements on able-bodied Medicaid recipients without dependents: 47% in favor of the new requirements, and 46% opposed.

A mid-June Fox News poll found similar results: 59% of registered voters said they oppose the bill, while 38% of them favored it.

About half of voters in that poll thought the bill would hurt them and their families, while 40% said they did not understand the bill very much, or at all.

Some Democratic leaders and officials believe the combination of tax cuts and potential changes to some Americans’ health care coverage could allow the party to recapture the anger and anti-Trump backlash that helped the party reclaim the House in 2018, after Republicans passed their tax package and repeatedly failed to repeal Obamacare.

“It’s going to be very important for the Democrats to define, for the electorate and for voters, exactly who’s most impacted by these Medicaid cuts, and in particular, what the longer term impacts of all the debt are actually going to be,” said Dan Sena, a Democratic strategist who oversaw the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2018.

But the midterms may not be exact parallels.

Heading into 2018, Republicans were defending 25 districts that voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries finished his his record breaking speech on the floor of the House of Representatives in Washington, July 3, 2025.

House of Representatives

Today, 13 Democrats represent districts carried by Trump last year, while just three Republicans represent districts won by former Vice President Kamala Harris.

Eight years ago, Democrats largely opposed Trump’s legislative agenda. But this time around, some Democrats have offered support for some of his policies, including the new provision for no taxes on tips.

Democrats also acknowledge they face a different Republican Party in 2025 — one that is more in step with Trump, and one that, despite some sharp policy debates, ultimately backed his top legislative priority.

That’s not to say there weren’t exceptions: Democrats pointed to the dissent of Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., who slammed the bill’s Medicaid provisions, and its potential impact on his home state.

His comments led to criticism — and the threat of a primary challenge – from Trump.

When the dust settled, Tillis voted against the bill in the Senate, but also announced he would not run for re-election.

Speaking at the Iowa rally on Thursday, Trump suggested Republicans can use the megabill to their advantage in the midterms.

“With all of the things we did with the tax cuts and rebuilding our military, not one Democrat voted for us,” Trump said. “And I think we use it in the campaign that’s coming up — the midterms, because we’ve got to beat them.”

Deadly storm slams New Jersey, hard-hit town cancels 4th of July celebration

Deadly storm slams New Jersey, hard-hit town cancels 4th of July celebration

A deadly storm with winds topping 60 mph tore through central New Jersey on Thursday night, forcing one town to cancel its Fourth of July celebrations.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said the towns of Plainfield and North Plainfield, about 30 miles outside of New York, were among the hardest hit.

The severe thunderstorm caused fatalities, Murphy said, but he did not say how many died. ABC New York station WABC reported that two people died in Plainfield and one died in North Plainfield.

In this screen grab from a video taken on July 4, 2025, a large downed tree is shown after a storm moved through North Plainfield, N.J.

Plainfield is under a state of emergency, with Mayor Adrian Mapp saying the “devastating storm” left “deep scars” and “widespread damage.”

“In light of this tragedy, we cannot, in good conscience, proceed with our Fourth of July parade, concert, or fireworks,” the mayor said in a statement overnight. “This is not a time for celebration. It is a time to regroup and focus all our energy on recovery.”

“There will be a time to celebrate again, to raise our flags and enjoy the joys of community,” the mayor said. “But right now, we must come together to clean up, to support one another, and to begin the work of rebuilding.”

Governor Murphy on Thursday night warned residents to stay inside to avoid the toppled trees, downed power lines and burning transformers.

‘Whole Picture Looks Awkward’: Karoline Leavitt’s Picture-Perfect Family Photo Takes a Turn When Fans Notice How Her Husband Is Holding Their Son

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt found herself at the center of social media controversy when a fan page dedicated to her shared a poolside photo featuring her, husband Nicholas Riccio, and their almost 10-month-old son.

The 27-year-old political powerhouse, known for her polished professional appearance in the briefing room, likely had no idea that a casual family snapshot would spark intense debate online.

‘Whole Picture Looks Awkward’: Karoline Leavitt’s Picture-Perfect Family Photo Takes a Turn When Fans Notice How Her Husband Is Holding Their Son
A Karoline Leavitt fan page shares a family photo of the White House Press Secretary, her 60-year-old husband and their 10-month-old son. (Photo: Karolineleavitt/Instagram).

The photo captured what appeared to be a perfect family moment, with Leavitt looking relaxed and radiant wearing a bbay blue blouse and white pants while her 60-year-old husband sported a bold blue and green plaid suit that certainly made a statement poolside.

Their little boy, dressed in a soft blue and white onesie, seemed camera-ready as the family soaked up the sun.

The fan page accompanied the image with the caption, “Beautiful Sunday If you value faith, family, and freedom. Let’s see,” presenting what should have been an uncontroversial family moment.

However, social media users quickly turned their attention to how Riccio was holding their son, and the commentary that followed was less than flattering.

“Is this the child’s grandpa?” one person posted on X.

Another person joked, “Probably the first time he held his grandson,” immediately setting the tone for what would become a viral conversation about the couple’s 32-year age gap.

The reactions only intensified from there, with another social media user writing, “That’s probably the first time he’s ever held that child. The whole picture looks awkward as f—k.”

The age difference between the couple has been a constant source of public fascination and commentary since their relationship became known.

Many social media users couldn’t resist playing into the grandfather narrative, with one person tweeting, “Great photo with Peepaw!” while another chimed in with, “Holy cow. Your little one is getting big. Time flys!”

The jokes and observations seemed to multiply as the photo gained traction across various platforms. Perhaps most pointed among the reactions was one user’s assessment of Riccio and Leavitt’s relationship dynamics and a broader skepticism that has followed the couple since they first went public with their romance. The criticism has been particularly notable given her husband’s $6 million net worth.

The fan-posted photo represented a rare public glimpse of the real estate billionaire alongside his wife and son, particularly significant given that Leavitt had notably stopped featuring Riccio prominently on her own social media platforms in recent months.

The last significant post including him appeared on her Instagram on April 21 during the White House Easter Egg Roll.

Even her Mother’s Day post in May featured only Leavitt and baby Niko, with the caption “There’s nothing I love more than being his mom. Happy Mother’s Day,” conspicuously omitting any mention or appearance of her husband.

The couple’s relationship timeline has been remarkably swift by any measure.

They first met at a political gathering hosted by a mutual friend, where what began as a working relationship evolved into romance.

Riccio initially joined the finance committee for Leavitt’s unsuccessful 2022 congressional campaign in New Hampshire before their personal connection deepened. Their son Nicholas, affectionately called Niko, was born in July 2024, and by January 2025, the couple held their wedding at New Hampshire’s upscale Wentworth By The Sea Country Club, just days before Trump’s second inauguration.

Despite the ongoing social media commentary about their age gap and relationship dynamics, Leavitt continues to navigate her role as both a new mother and one of the most visible faces of the Trump administration.

The fan-shared poolside photo, intended to showcase a simple family moment, instead became another chapter in the public’s ongoing fascination with her personal life, proving that even images shared by supporters can become fodder for public consumption and debate when high-profile figures are involved.

The Best MagSafe Wireless Chargers

The Best MagSafe Wireless Chargers

More Good MagSafe Chargers

Here are a few other MagSafe wireless chargers we have tested that didn’t quite manage to earn a place above.

Photograph: Simon Hill

UAG Wireless Charging Pad and Stand for $60: If you like industrial design with a carbon-fiber finish, this magnetic charging puck from Urban Armor Gear is solid. It has a handy kickstand for propping your iPhone in landscape orientation to watch a video, and it comes with a detachable, rugged 4-foot USB-C cable but no power adapter. UAG says it can deliver up to 15 watts but is not Qi2-certified. It’s just way too expensive.

Anker MagGo Wireless Charger Pad (Qi2) for $30: Our top pick until Apple’s redesign, this Qi2 charger brings MagSafe-style magnetic charging and a 15-watt charging rate. This pad stays put, has a durable aluminum casing that stays relatively cool, and has a 5-foot USB-C cable permanently attached. It can also charge AirPods with a magnetic charging case, but does not come with a power adapter.

Belkin BoostCharge Pro Convertible Magnetic Wireless Charging Stand for $45: This Qi2-certified stand has a magnetic pad that can lie flat to charge older phones or fold out to act as a stand for MagSafe iPhones and other Qi2 phones in portrait or landscape orientation (handy for StandBy mode). It charges at up to 15 watts and comes with a 5-foot USB-C to USB-C cable and a power supply.

Casetify PowerThru 2-in-1 Charging Stand for $92: If you want a charger for your MagSafe iPhone and AirPods (or other earbuds), this one from Casetify is a decent pick. It has a squared-off base with an indent for AirPods, a metallic rod, and a slightly adjustable MagSafe pad for your iPhone that charges at 7.5 watts. I don’t love the visible logo around the pad or the options with basketball courts and other designs for the base, and it has a bright LED.

The Best MagSafe Wireless Chargers

Casetify Magnetic Wireless Charger for $38: Cute design galore elevates Casetify’s MagSafe charger lineup. It offers more than 600 designs, from cat art to sports teams. It is a Qi charger with MagSafe, so it will align perfectly with MagSafe iPhones and charge at 7.5 watts, but it also supports Qi charging and can juice up any Qi phone at up to 15 watts. It comes with a 3.3-foot, permanently attached, black and white, braided USB-C cable, but you need a power adapter.

Mophie’s 3-in-1 Travel Charger With MagSafe for $90: This is a nice travel option, though it takes up a bit more space when it’s unfolded. It folds neatly into a fabric case with a cable and charging adapter. It will fast-charge iPhones at 15 watts, and this updated model includes fast-charging support for the Apple Watch and has a spot for your AirPods Pro.

23 years later | Southeast Texas community still seeks justice in unsolved murder of Dannarriah Finley

23 years later | Southeast Texas community still seeks justice in unsolved murder of Dannarriah Finley

Dannarriah Finley was just 4 when she was murdered in Orange, Texas on July 4, 2002. Her case remains unsolved 23 years later.

ORANGE, Texas — Twenty-three years ago today, 4-year-old Dannarriah Finley vanished from her bedroom in Orange. Her body was found four days later on Pleasure Island in Port Arthur, marking the beginning of one of Southeast Texas’ most haunting unsolved crimes.

On July 4, 2002, Dannarriah was taken from her home in Orange while sleeping alongside her siblings and cousins.

The precious little girl, who would have celebrated her fifth birthday just weeks later, was sexually assaulted and murdered in a crime that shattered the community.

Police and Finley’s family believe she was snatched from her bedroom in the middle of the night.

Today, as Orange residents mark another Independence Day, they’re reminded once again of the tragedy that struck one of their youngest residents.

The unthinkable crime united the City of Orange. When Dannarriah disappeared, the community mobilized in unprecedented ways to search for her.

“We searched and searched,” Pastor C.W. Crawford with the Mountain Missionary Baptist Church previously told 12News. “Everybody was afraid. Everybody was holding their children close to them, because nothing had happened like that in Orange, Texas.”

Despite extensive efforts by the Orange Police Department and FBI, no arrests have been made. However, investigators remain hopeful that advancing technology and community tips will eventually solve the case.

Brandon Bess, an investigator with the Texas Rangers who retired in 2024 was working to breathe new life into the investigation through modern forensic techniques.

“In Dannarriah’s case, there’s not necessarily untested evidence, but there might be, for lack of a better term, under-tested evidence,” Bess said in a previous interview. “So, what they did in 2018, even up into 2019, we may have an improvement.”

Law enforcement continues to retest evidence recovered from the scene, believing that improved DNA technology might detect smaller samples that earlier methods missed.

“There’s two items of evidence that they recovered that we believe we’re now going to retest again,” Bess previously said.

Beyond technological advances, investigators believe the key to solving the case lies within the community itself. Bess was convinced that those responsible shared details of their crime with others.

“I think the most important part of this case is that we’ll solve this case with the right witness coming forward,” Bess said. “Everyone agrees that the folks that were involved in this absolutely talked to someone else. They did not keep this a total secret.”

The investigation points to multiple perpetrators, and in a previous interview, Bess said he believed several people possess crucial information.

“We believe multiple persons at least knows about this, and that there’s somebody out there they can bring us that little piece of information that, you know, they may not think it’s important, but it is,” Bess said.

The case has left a lasting impact on Southeast Texas, with its unique and disturbing nature continuing to challenge investigators.

“This is probably the most unique case in Southeast Texas,” said Orange Police Department Lt. Stephen Ward in a previous interview.

For the Orange Police Department, Dannarriah’s case remains a top priority more than two decades later.

“This is the epitome of cases and City of Orange, and so anybody that works here knows the details of this case,” Ward said. “We are constantly reviewing things. This isn’t something we put on the back burner. It’s in the forefront of all of our cases.”

The trauma extends beyond law enforcement, continuing to affect community members who lived through the tragedy.

“Even in my congregation, I’m somewhat nervous when I see little children coming down stairs by themselves to use the restroom,” Pastor Crawford previously told 12News. “I’ve never forgotten what happened to Dannarriah Finley.”

As Orange marks another July 4th without answers, investigators urge anyone with information to come forward. No detail is too small, and the passage of time may have given people new perspectives on what they witnessed or heard.

Texas Crime Stoppers continues to offer a cash reward of up to $3,000 to anyone who provides information leading to an arrest in the case.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Orange Police Department, Texas Rangers, or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.

For Dannarriah’s family and the Orange community, the search for justice continues, fueled by the hope that this Independence Day will not pass without bringing them one step closer to answers.

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.

Alex Warren’s ‘Ordinary’ No. 1, Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Manchild’ Surging on Billboard’s Songs of the Summer Chart

Alex Warren’s ‘Ordinary’ No. 1, Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Manchild’ Surging on Billboard’s Songs of the Summer Chart

What will be the No. 1 song of the summer of 2025? As of July 4, Alex Warren’s “Ordinary” maintains its lead in the race, per Billboard’s Songs of the Summer chart.

The 20-position Songs of the Summer running tally tracks the most popular titles based on cumulative performance on the weekly streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Billboard Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day through Labor Day (this year encompassing charts dated June 7 through Sept. 6). At the end of the season, the top song of the summer will be revealed.

(Titles that appeared on the 2024 Songs of the Summer chart or peaked on the Hot 100 during or before summer 2024 are ineligible to appear on this year’s Songs of the Summer ranking.)

“Ordinary” has ruled Songs of the Summer for four of the five weeks since the survey returned this season. It added a fourth frame atop the latest, July 5-dated Hot 100.

Morgan Wallen boasts the next two songs on the Songs of the Summer chart at the July 4 mark — “What I Want,” featuring Tate McRae (No. 2), and “Just in Case” (No. 3) — while his “I’m the Problem” places at No. 5. Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “Luther” is at No. 4.

Also notably, rounding out the Songs of the Summer top 10, Leon Thomas’ Hot R&B Songs leader “Mutt” ranks at its No. 10 high.

Among hits scaling the Songs of the Summer survey beyond the top 10, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild” bounds 16-11 — after it soared in at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in June; Ravyn Lenae’s “Love Me Not” lifts 19-17; and Benson Boone’s “Sorry I’m Here for Someone Else” debuts at No. 19.

Check out the top 10 summer songs every year throughout the Hot 100’s history (from the chart’s start in 1958); the top 500 Greatest of All Time Songs of the Summer; and the Songs of the Summer chart in its entirety each week throughout the summer.

Lululemon Stock Is Beaten Down Now, But It Could 10X | The Motley Fool

Recent years have been tough sledding for Lululemon Athletica (LULU 0.52%) investors. While the broad market indices are soaring, the apparel retailer’s stock is down 20% cumulatively in the past five years — and down 52% from all-time highs.

Revenue growth has slowed significantly, with new competition entering the market amid slowing overall consumer spending on athleisure items. Pessimism has slowly crept into the share price, sending its price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) near a 10-year low.

Despite this pain and underperformance, I believe Lululemon has a chance to 10x its stock for shareholders over the long haul. Here’s why.

Room to keep taking market share in America

In the first quarter of 2022, Lululemon’s North America revenue grew 29% year over year. In Q1 2025, that figure has dipped to 4% on a constant currency basis. This is the key factor leading to Lululemon’s falling stock price. Wall Street is highly concerned that the brand has reached saturation in the United States and Canada while facing stiff competition from upstart copycat brands.

There may be some truth to new brands stealing some customers that would have instead gone to Lululemon, but the data doesn’t support it being the majority reason for this huge revenue growth slowdown. Nike‘s revenue slipped 11% year over year last quarter, while Athleta’s dipped 8%. Lululemon is growing while the competition is shrinking. That’s why management stated that it gained share within its product category so far in 2025, which is categorized as premium athletic wear.

So what is behind the revenue slowdown? In the pandemic and work-from-home peak, spending on athleisure apparel boomed, benefiting Lululemon. Now, that trend is partially reversing, which is affecting Lululemon’s growth. Taking a longer view, more casual athleisure clothing has taken share from formal wear for decades. I expect this to continue once this pandemic reversion ends.

As a market share taker in the category, Lululemon should be able to accelerate revenue growth in North America once this occurs. It is still a small player in the U.S. apparel market, which is estimated to have $359 billion in annual spending.

Going global with China and other markets

The Americas are still 73% of Lululemon’s net revenue, although the region is much smaller as a percentage of overall apparel sales globally. This gives Lululemon a clear path to grow internationally for years to come.

Last quarter, China mainland revenue grew 22% year over year in constant currency to $368.1 million. This is just barely making a dent in the country’s population of 1.4 billion people. At the same time, consumer spending in China has been hurt due to the collapse of a real estate spending bubble, which has affected popular international brands like Nike and Apple. Despite this, Lululemon’s growth looks fantastic in China, which should be a positive signal for investors.

Growth has been rock-solid in other markets, with revenue not in North America or China growing 17% year over year to $328 million. In areas like Australia, other Asian countries, and Latin America, Lululemon has plenty of room to grow its premium athleisure brand. Both China and the Rest of World segment should keep gaining as a percentage of Lululemon’s overall revenue, which would be a tailwind to help reverse this slow revenue growth.

Add up the potential of the North America, China, and Rest of World segments, and I believe Lululemon can generate consolidated double-digit revenue growth over the next decade, even though it only grew 8% on a constant currency basis last quarter.

The buyback cherry on top

Today, Lululemon’s revenue is just under $11 billion annually. Due to the factors discussed above, I think Lululemon’s revenue can double or triple in the next 10 years.

In order for the stock to 10x, we need some more factors to push the share price higher. For one, Lululemon has consistently raised the bar on its profit margins due to its pricing power in high-end athleisure. Tariffs on imports to the United States could pose a roadblock to this progress in the near term, but I see no reason why further scale won’t lead to further profit margin expansion for the brand.

Second, Lululemon is consistently repurchasing its outstanding shares at this cheap price. Its shares outstanding are down 6% in the last three years. This may not seem like much, but a steadily declining share count can be another way for the magic of compound interest to help boost stock returns, just with the compounding working in the negative direction. As Lululemon’s shares outstanding keep coming down, its stock price should rise even more over the next 10 years.

Lastly, Lululemon’s shares are trading at a P/E ratio of 16.6, close to their lowest level in the last 10 years. As revenue growth accelerates, this earnings multiple should begin to normalize back to its long-term average, which will further juice stock returns.

It won’t occur because of any hypergrowth on the revenue line, but Lululemon can 10x for shareholders due to a combination of steady growth, margin expansion, share buybacks, and multiple expansion over the next 10 years.
